The Extras
This two-disc set reproduces some of the extras from the original release, while augmenting them with some excellent documentary footage on the second disc as well as a great commentary track featuring Director Bryan Singer.
On disc one you'll find the theatrical cut of the film that you can view in an "enhanced viewing mode". This allows you to splice in the deleted scenes, which are the same as the ones on the original DVD, as well as about seventeen little behind-the-scenes videos.
The real treat on disc one is the full-length audio commentary by Bryan Singer and Brian Peck. The latter bounces questions off Singer as the Director opens up and divulges a lot of fun bits about the movie and its upcoming sequel. Things are pointed out in the commentary track that even fans may not have noticed, such as the breath coming out of Iceman's mouth as he talks with Rogue. Did you know that neither Patrick Stewart nor Ian McKellen knew how to place chess, so a chess expert had to be brought in so the final scene in the movie could be done well? Some of the stuff that was revealed about the sequel surrounds Wolverine, a new Blackbird for the X-Men, a "funny line" about Rogues hair, and how the film can be compared to The Empire Strikes Back.
This is one of those commentaries that lasts all the way through the credits. It was recorded about five months into the shooting of X2, and Singer and Peck talk a bit about making the sequel during the credits, about having their release date pushed up in the original, and much more. It's a highly entertaining commentary track and those who really enjoyed the film will get quite a kick out of it.
Disc two goes into great detail on the making of the movie with tons of on-the-set footage that was filmed during the production. It begins with an introduction by Bryan Singer from the set of X-Men 2 and continues to an in-depth documentary that can be viewed as one feature that runs for nearly two hours, or in parts by selecting the various featurettes from their own section of the menus.
While watching these extras, I was actually reminded of the excellent four-disc edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The way the documentary is structured is quite similar to the six-hour one on that set, and it delivers roughly the same type of information for X-Men.
These documentaries are included in a section titled "Evolution X", while another area of the disc is devoted to a short featurette and trailer for X-Men 2 and the second Daredevil teaser trailer. In the "Evolution X" features, you can watch each documentary in a branching mode that will pop up a little "X" and will take you to additional footage when you press enter. If you accidentally miss one of the branching clips, you can find links to them in the menus.
It all begins with "The Uncanny Suspects", which is a casting featurette that runs for nearly twenty-five minutes. In it, all of the major cast members talk about their unfamiliarity with the comics, and how they got the rolls, but it also addresses some of the origins of the movie where Singer talks about making a movie that departs a bit from what fans have known in the comics for over thirty years. In this section of the disc (and in the branching feature) you can view Hugh Jackman's first reading, his screen test with Anna Paquin, and a character still gallery.
"X-Factor" looks at creating the look of the film from the costume design, the design of Sabertooth, Mystique's extensive make-up, and the look of Toad. Extra footage included in this section includes costume tests for Cyclops and Storm, a Toad make-up test, and Image Galleries for "Hardware", "Magneto", "Locations", and "Xavier's School".
The big feature on the disc is the hour-long "Production Documentary Scrapbook". This is very similar to the excellent "Beginning" documentary on the Episode I DVD as it takes you all the way through pre-production and the end of filming. The early part of the documentary is a lot of fun as we get to see them planning a lot of sequences that didn't make it into the final cut of the film. Some of these include the origins for characters such as Storm and a fight between Wolverine and Sabretooth inside the arm of the Statue of Liberty. A funny moment comes when the cast is together in costume for the first time, and its mentioned that they should wear long coats when they are walking around in costumes so pictures of them won't pop up on the internet like images of Cyclops' visor did.
Additional footage in the documentary include a multi-angle shot of the train stunt, a multi-angle fight rehearsal between Wolvie and Sabretooth, and a visit to the set by the Prime Minister of Canada.
"The Visual Effects of X-Men" is pretty self-explanatory. This featurette comes after the big production documentary and looks at the post-production of the movie. There's a lot about the CGI 3D morph of Mystique, a look at the creation of Wolvie's CG claws, and much more. Throughout the branching portion of the feature, there are a lot of cool multi-angle anamatics included. These are "Liberty Head", "Toad vs. Jean Gray", "Wolverine vs. Sabretooth", and "Wolverine vs. Mystique". You can view them either with the anamatic alone, the film alone, or a split-screen composite of the two. Also, there's a detailed effects breakdown of Senator Kelly's death with no audio.
"Reflections of the X-Men" is a short featurette that includes interviews with the cast and crew from the set of X2 where they look back at the first one and how its affect them since. For example, Patrick Stewart compares stepping into the role of Xavier to sitting in that big Captain's chair for the first time fifteen years ago. In this area there's also DV cam footage from the US and International premiers as filmed by Producer Tom DeSanto. These little featurettes are a lot of fun, especially since the camera always seems to wander to Anna Paquin.
The "Marketing the X-Men" section includes three teaser trailers, nine TV spots, and twelve internet interstitials. Whew.

X-Men vond ik wel een leuke film, heb hem dan ook aangeschaft op DVD, maar goed genoeg voor een special 2 disc edition vind ik hem niet. Zal deze special edition dan ook niet aanschaffen, vind hem niet bijzonder genoeg.

Dit is naar mijn mening gewoon geldklopperij......al die special editions uitbrengen na al een goede 1e release.....

Daar ben ik het helemaal mee eens. De eerste editie zag er al redelijk flitsend uit met die zilveren (dacht ik) kaft en dan komt er nu nog even een nieuwe 2 disc met DTS :mad: :nono:

de dts track moet subliem zijn volgens de amerikaanse recensies. sommigen hebben het zelfs over dat deze een van die tracks is die goed laat zien dat dts superieur zou zijn aan dolby en dat men alleen vanwege de dts die disc zou moeten aanschaffen. ben benieuwd. heb gewacht op deze editie toen ik hoorde dat deze uit zou komen (is ook alweer een hele tijd geleden dat dat bekend werd). overigens staan niet alle extra's van de eerdere versie erop.

X-Men in DTS: zal wel geweldig klinken.:) Ga ik waarschijnlijk wel aanschaffen.
Vandaar dat ik de normale in de uitverkoop zie liggen
Zal deze editie ook aanschaffen:) En zal de gewone editie waarschijnlijk gewoon houden, want die vind ik ook mooi:D

Ik wil deze film ook wel graag hebben: had bijna de normale versie in huis gehaald, maar ben blij dat dat niet gelukt is.
X-Men is gewoon een gave film, en dan zeker met zo'n (als het goed is) perfecte DTS track: die moet je gewoon hebben.

lijkt me een perfecte uitgave,en daarom mijn 1disc laatst maar verkocht...

Ik vind X-Men niet goed genoeg om op DVD te komen, dus zeker geen 2-disk SE
Ik heb X-Men al op dvd, en ik kan niet zeggen dat ik hem vaak kijk. Mischien als ik de nieuwe dvd voor weinig geld kan krijgen, dat ik hem dan koop.

SuperHero+DTS= volgens mij vrij prijzig zal me niets verbazen als hij een kleine 35€ gaat kosten

lijkt me een perfecte uitgave,en daarom mijn 1disc laatst maar verkocht...
mazzel,niels Laat eens weten of de explosie bij het station (als Cyclops het dak opblaast) bij de DTS beter overkomt. Ik vind deze namelijk erg onderdrukt bij de huidige (Aussie) versie.
Misschien dat ik dan overweeg een goedkope versie te halen (R1), want vind het nog steeds een van de betere superheldenfilms.
Ze hadden de special edition tog tegelijk met de gewone editie kunnen uitbrengen. Hmpf ik vind t geldklopperij. Kheb de gewone editie al, kdenk niet dat ik deze ga aanschaffen.

Goede film maar om nu direct de SE te gaan kopen, nou nee.
Ik vind het geluid al zeer goed op de eerste versie en zou geen reden weten om alweer extra geld uit te gaan geven voor een SE.
Ze blijven maar komen met die SE(s), kunnen ze niet gelijk met een SE komen, scheelt ons weer geld!!!!!!
Maar ja, waar doen ze het uiteindelijk voor?:( :(

Ik heb net de nieuwe trailer voor X2 bekeken en zit nu alweer te watertanden om deze te zien.
Ik moet nu dus zeker de nieuwe dvd hebben want de eerste heb ik al bijna grijs gedraaid en is dus wel aan vernieuwing toe :D ;) :D .
En ja het is pure geldklopperij wat ze doen maar je kan er helaas toch niets aan doen, behalve dan maar een versie kopen maar ze zijn zo uitgekookt dat ze op allebei de versies verschillende extra's zetten en voor de fans van bepaalde films waarbij ze dit doen is dat natuurlijk ook weer een reden om zo'n special edition te kopen.
