In de UK is nu eindelijk een SE van Once Upon A Time In America aangekondigd. Deze 2-disk SE zal in de UK vanaf 23 juni verkrijgbaar zijn.

Op een andere site (weet niet meer welke nu) stond al iets van een jaar geleden dat Robert De Niro & James Woods een audiocommentaar hadden opgenomen voor deze film, die special zou zijn gedaan voor de aangekondigde SE van Warner. Nu de SE is aangekondigd zie ik deze extra nergens meer tussen staan.

Verder schijnt het ook niet de langste versie te zijn, er nog steeds een scene te ontbreken. Waarbij de (beruchte) verkrachtingssene vaak wordt genoemd, her en der.

En wat mij ontgaat is dat de Making of maar 20 minuten duurt. Mijn god hadden ze niet iets beters kunnen vinden ? Ik bedoel de film is zo groot opgezet, je maakt mijn niet wijs dat er geen betere documantaires te vinden zijn dat een 20 minuten durende Promo, want dat is dan toch waar het meestal op uit draait.

Nou ja als de film maar geremasterd is, breedbeeld en 5.1 zijn wij al lang tevreden, want we hebben nu al zo lang moeten wachten op deze film.

Iemand had op het andere topic volgens mij gereageerd dat de Amerikaanse editie 9 minuten langer moet duren dan de Europese.... Dan is mijn keuze snel gemaakt.

Paar jaar terug zond VPRO of NPS een docu van dik een uur uit over deze film, vlak voordat ze de film uitzonden. Staat die niet op de disc?

Ik ben erg blij dat deze film op dvd komt,maar had eigelijk gehoopt op het ondertaande:

According to an interview given by Sergio Leone's son in november 1998, Regency and Warner are planning to reconstruct and re-release Sergio Leone's original 250-minutes director's cut and have requested the missing footage from him. Among the missing sequences that may be restored to the film are:
Noodles as a kid comes back home after the failed attempt to steal the drunk's clock and finds that his father has eaten all his dinner;
Noodles and Max rob a black trumpet player and steal his wallet and trumpet;
Old Noodles (De Niro) notices a black car following him after he leaves Riversdale Cemetetery, and he takes notes of the license plate. The same black car is later seen blowing up in front of senator Bailey's house
Noodles gets drunk after his failed attempt to rape Deborah; he picks up a hooker but falls asleep in the bed instead of having sex with her;
An old Jimmy O'Donnel (Treat Williams) meets senator Bailey and convinces him that suicide is his only way out.

The so called director's cut does not exist in a finished state. Nino Baragli never edited the extra scenes and the cast didn't sound loop their dialogue to those extra scenes.

The 2 cuts made by the BBFC in the UK (a gun being pressed to a woman's breast and De Niro tearing off Elizabeth McGovern's underwear in the rape scene) were reinstated in the (now deleted) widescreen version.

There is a picture/still from 'Once Upon a Time in America' which is often in books/chapters on the film. The picture is of Noodles (De Niro) and Eve in bed together, and Noodles is getting out of bed holding a gun as he's clearly heard someone coming in. This scene is definatley not in the 227 min version.

Zelfs de documantaire "Once upon a time Sergio Leone" staat er niet op,waarin o.a.James Woods en Claudia Cardinale,De vrouw van Sergio Leone,Ennio Morricone aan het woord komen.

Denk dat niets van het bovengenoemde op de dvd gaat verschijnen,of weet iemand hier meer over?

Maar omdat ik zo'n regiovrije Portugese versie had, die een tijdje geleden in de omloop was, sloeg hij vast en dus heb ik em teruggebracht. En besloot ik te wachten op deze versie.

Maar inderdaad De Niro in Mafiafilms belooft meestal een hoop goeds. Getuigende zijn staat van dienst.

Dat het voor jou veel deed denken aan GF2 kan ik goed begrijpen. Hier moet je dan de fantastische soundtrack van Ennio Morricone bij denken en toch de dramatiek verder uitgewerkt en een meesterwerk is geboren.

GENERAL NOTES ABOUT THE RUNTIME:
There is quite a lot of debate regarding the complete runtime for this film. The original Italian version ran for 236 mins. (NTSC), which was cut down twice into a 139 and 192 min. version for US distribution. A 226 min. version also exsists which was made available on Laserdisc, Video and DVD in Brazil and still omits several key scenes including a rape scene with Robert De Niro and Elizabeth McGovern.

Warner Brothers will be releasing what they call the "Official Director's Cut" with a runtime of 229 mins. (NTSC) and 220 mins. (PAL), To be clear this is as close to a Director's Cut anyone is going to get. Sergio Leone's Director's Cut is supposed to be 250 mins. (NTSC) sadly this version does not exist in a finished state. Nino Baragli never edited the extra scenes and the cast didn't sound loop their dialogue to those extra scenes. The Warner Brother's release is expected to be the MOST COMPLETE VERSION OF THE FILM AVAILABLE TO DATE.

A few notes on the transfer:

The Good...

Both pictorially and sonically, a perfect transfer in the proper aspect ratio with beautifully scaled colors and black level. This is a high bit rate transfer, equivalent to Sony's SuperBit.

The Not So Bad...

One anomaly may disturb some, while I didn't have a real problem with it, considering the alternative...

There was apparently a plan in place to divide the film with the first disc ending with the Intermission and the second picking up thereafter.

Part One is approximately 160 minutes. Had Warner encoded the discs so that 160 minutes was on disc one as planned, it would have necessitated a lowering of the bit rate. Even though printed materials lead one to believe that this is the case, it is incorrect.

Disc One ends at the two hour point, in the middle of a sequence. There is no "painless" break point in this area of the film. Disc Two begins with the end of that sequence, continues an additional forty minutes to the Intermission, and then goes on to Part Two of the film.

Although not what one might wish for in a perfect world, taking into consideration the look and textures which have been accomplished with the transfer and compression, I would have made the same decision rather than to lower quality. I firmly believe that the correct decision has been made.

The Ugly...

Not a thing.

With the single warning that this is an extremely violent film and may not be to the taste of some, I suggest it as a blind purchase. Once Upon a Time in America is a film with a mystical pull and artistry all its own. While Paramount's Indiana Jones Trilogy, due out in late fall will most likely be the most popular in 2003, Once Upon a Time in America will be one of the most important modern films to be released this year.

Ik vind meer dat the Godfather2 dicht achter OUATIA zit, maar ja smaken verschillen gelukkig 8) . Één ding zullen we het eens zijn... het zijn alle "3" toppers :wink:
