hier zijn de highlights:

Story Synopsis:
In the year 2029, astronaut Leo Davidson (Wahlberg) is forced to make an emergency landing on an Earth-like planet. He soon learns that this strange place is inhabited by primitive humans and English-speaking apes. Following his capture and subsequent escape, Leo assembles a small band of defiant humans and empathetic apes in an attempt to re-establish contact with his space station. Freedom or complete annihilation is in the hands of the rebellion against the gorilla army. Based on a novel by Pierre Boulle.

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits a picture that is typical of Tim Burton’s dark, moody style. The picture should be viewed in a completely blackened room for optimal visual information. Contrast and shadow delineation appear well balanced, even in the darkest scenes. Images are sharp, with nicely rendered detail and definition, but some of the brighter scenes appear somewhat smeared or plugged-up. Edge enhancement and pixelization are rarely noticed. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The discrete 5.1 soundtracks are superb, in terms of the their dimensional attributes and the recording. The fidelity is state-of-the-art, ranking among the best soundtracks currently available on DVD. Danny Elfman’s music score is also an exemplary recording, with a rich, engrossing presence that is full-bodied and effectively enveloping, featuring liberal distribution to the stereo surrounds. As expected, there are spatially aggressive moments in the film, for which the surrounds, and the rest of the soundstage for that matter are fully engaging, serving to heighten the sense of emotion and the perception of space all around the listener (such as the battle scene in Chapter 29). Otherwise, the soundfield is consistently expansive throughout, aided by the music and atmospheric effects. The audio presentation is simply pleasurable to experience, with a satisfying sense of being engulfed. If you use a back surround decoder, such the SMART® Devices CS-3X, Jr., you should notice a subtle yet enhanced sense of spaciousness in the surround hemisphere. You’re also sure to get a quite a workout in the low frequencies, as you should expect substantial deep bass activity in both the main channels and the .1 LFE. Voices are presented with remarkable clarity, and the dialogue is very well recorded with a reasonably convincing sense of spatial consistency. The DTS® Digital Surround™ version offers a slightly more prominent low-end presence, as well as spatiality that seems a little more refined in terms of the overall perception of expansiveness. This soundtrack production is one that should nicely serve high-end audio systems through a combination of exemplary audio quality and seamless surround sound. (Perry Sun)

Dag luitjes,

Cheers,
StevenTD.
