Coppola is Back

Tromgeroffel voor dit grootse, maar wel nog onofficiële nieuws (weet dus niet of het 100% waar is, het stond op teletekst). Francis Ford Coppola gaat eindelijk weer eens een film maken. En niet zomaar een film, maar een 'droomproject', vermits Coppola al een goede 30 jaar geleden de rechten op het boek 'On The Road' van Jack Kerouac heeft gekocht. Een legendarisch boek verfilmt door een legendarisch regisseur die al (te) lang niks meer van zich heeft laten horen: deze film moet wel een hype worden onder de cinemaliefhebbers en zal (indien het bericht klopt) één van de meest geanticipeerde films worden. Vraag is: kan Coppola het nog (iets wat hij zich zelf ook schijnt af te vragen)? Kan hij nog Cinema met een grote C maken? Ik denk van wel en ik kan alvast niet wachten op meer (officieel) nieuws rond dit project.

Geen idee of ie het kan. Maar het is op zich wel heel interessant nieuws. Een film van Coppola is altijd iets bijzonders en On the road is ook een heel speciaal boek. Ik ben wel benieuwd wat ie er van maakt.

Volgens ComingSoon.Net gaat scenarist Walter Salles de film ook regisseren, voor Zoetrope, de studio van Coppola. Salles is een talentvol cineast, maar ik had toch liever Coppola gezien. Ik vraag me nu wel af welk bericht klopt (het probleem met onofficiële berichten). Ik duim nog voor een Coppola-regie (tegen beter weten in).

Walter Salles Hits the Road

Walter Salles (Dark Water) will direct the feature adaptation of the Jack Kerouac classic On the Road, which is being produced by American Zoetrope, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Salles' The Motorcycle Diaries screenwriter Jose Rivera is adapting the book and Rebecca Yeldham, who executive produced "Diaries," will produce.

The 1957 novel, which played a role in giving rise to the Beat movement, is narrated by Kerouac's thinly veiled alter ego Sal Paradise, who gets inspired to hit the road and see America. The story follows his ups and downs as he hitchhikes, hops trains, meets other travelers, struggles for meals and explores the themes of freedom and longing.

Salles' boarding also reteams him with Focus Features and Pathe International, two companies that worked together on the director's award-winning "Diaries" and would jointly control the worldwide distribution rights to "Road."

Casting and production is expected to begin in 2006.

Good news, everyone! Try to put Jack and The Rainmaker out of your mind for a minute, and rejoice at the prospect of one of America's greatest filmmakers returning to his rightful place, in the foldy-picnic chair marked 'director'. Yes, after eight years, Francis Ford Coppola has a new project.

He's decided to put aside his operations dabbling in the wine and hotel businesses to adapt, direct and produce "Youth Without Youth", a low budget thriller (of sorts) set in the years just before World War II. Apparently the story, adapted from a 1988 novella by Mircea Eliade, centres on a professor who finds himself a fugitive, pursued across Europe and India, resulting from a 'cataclysmic incident'.

The cast is set to include Tim Roth, Maria Lara, and Bruno Ganz – who most will remember from Wim Wenders' Wings Of Desire, though who also was recently so memorable as Hitler in Downfall.

Perhaps the whole indie thing of the last decade (including the success of his little girl) has rubbed off on Francis, and we're glad to see that he's shrugged off the Hollywood Studio-sent gangster scripts, and decided to go his own way again. Word has it that he has been in Romania since February, and has already secretly scouted all of his locations, and chosen to work largely out of Bucharest.

No word of a release date yet, and given his previous track record for overages in all areas, we're not even going to guess at a release date. We'll just wish Francis good luck, and request that he take his time, and get it the way he wants it.

Zou het? Omdat het bij Coppola altijd maar afwachten is, wou ik er geen nieuwe topic over openen. Laten we hopen dat The Godfather eindelijk terugkeert...

Ik word een beetje moe van die waardeloze (en dan ben ik nog zeer aardig) persberichten (ik bedoel, Bruno Ganz is inmiddels toch wel een zeer gerenomeerd acteur en dan echt niet alleen uit Der Untergang), maar een nieuwe Coppola is *altijd* interessant, zeker als het een boek van Kerouac betreft. Maar waarom toch die volstrekt overbodige persberichten waar niemand op zit te wachten?!

On the road van Walter Salles (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337692/) komt later dit jaar uit, maar ondertussen heeft Coppola de film waarover ook in dit topic is gesproken al voltooid: Youth Without Youth (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481797/). Ik bekeek hem vanavond nadat ik de DVD al vele maanden in m'n bezit had, en hij beviel me enorm. Het verhaal is intrigerend en filmisch is ie beeldschoon! (y)
