Steven Spielberg has been expressing interest in directing a musical since at least the late 1970s and has throughout the years promised (or threatened depending on your love/hate of musicals) to do so eventually. He came close two times thus far with two films that many cite his least accomplished works: "1941" and "Hook." Fans of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom's" opening "Anything Goes" number can attest to potential in the idea of Spielberg taking on a musical--he does a mean Busby Berkley knock-off.

Since 2001-2002 releases of "Moulin Rouge" and "Chicago," any time Spielberg has mentioned in the press interest in finally trying his hand at a musical, historically challenged journalists make it sound like Spielberg is trying to ride on the coattails of these younger filmmakers successes. Spielberg's decades long flirtation with and desire to tackle this yet untested (for his filmography) genre would tell us that he's not the coattail rider the media would make him out to be.

Groet,
Danny
