Word has it that director Peter Jackson's King Kong will be released in April as an elaborate two-disc set. According to DVD producer Michael Pellerin, they've saved a lot of behind-the-scenes material for this release that wasn't included on the recently released Kong Production Diaries. No word yet if Universal and Jackson will also release an "ultimate edition" extended cut a la New Line's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

The Legend of King Kong

(Special Designed for Collector Edition)

The Concepts of King Kong:

King Kong:

The legendary classic about a giant ape

that is brought to New York City, and wreaks havoc!

Now, newly restored and digitally remastered! - 1933 (Black and White Screen)

(Approx. Time 104 mins. - 2 DISC)

Son of Kong:

Carl Denham, the showman who brought Kong

to New York, returns to Skull Island in search of a

rumored treasure. He finds diamonds, all right. And

something even more remarkable - Kong's son. - 1933 (Black and white Screen)

(Approx. Time: 69 mins. -1 DISC)

"Mighty Joe Young" :

Lightning struck again when the

team behind King Kong reunited to create another

towering ape: Mr. Joseph Young. This time the simian

is shorter and the jokes tongue-in-cheekier, but the

Oscar-winning Best Special Effects are just as

Kong-sized. - 1949 (Black and White Screen) (Approx. Time: 94 mins. -1 DISC)

King Kong:

The Big Apple is again besieged by the

monstrous King Kong. Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange

star in this ambitious remark of the 1933 original,

which adds a great deal of camp and good fun to the

story. - 1976 (Color Screen) (Approx. Time: 134 mins. -1 DISC)

King Kong Lives:

You thought the battle was over. But

it's just beginning. If you thought the beast was

dead, think again! In this thrilling sequel to the

original smash hit King Kong, scientists discover a

way to bring the giant gorilla back to life - if only

they can find a blood match. - 1986 (Color Screen) (Approx. Time: 105

mins. -1 DISC)

Kong 2005 DVD: March 28th?

1/13/06, 9:26 pm EST - Xoanon

The folks from thedigitalbits.com are saying the street date for Peter Jackson's King Kong may be March 28th, 2006. Since they tend be correct about these things, I'd say it's a sure bet...more info soon!

Steve Muller

Universal will release ape feature in two versions

The new King Kong will be leaping onto DVD on March 28 in single-disc and two-disc special edition versions.

Prebook is next Tuesday, according to retailers.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment declined to comment on its release plans, noting the film is still in theaters.

The studio has been unusually tight-lipped about details on its two Kong editions, forcing retailers to place orders without knowing what bonus materials each version will include.

Retailers say the single-disc edition has a suggested retail price of $29.98, and the special edition will be slightly more, at $31.98 SRP.

The same day that Universal’s Kong arrives, Warner Home Video will re-release the original 1933 version, which debuted on DVD in November as part of the studio’s collector’s set.

And 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is unleashing a massive 14-disc Planet of the Apes Ultimate DVD Collection (prebook March 1; $179.98), while Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is riding the Kong's coattails by releasing a Monster Edition of its 1998 lizard king, Godzilla (prebook Feb. 23; $19.94)—all being released on March 28.

The re-release of Warner's 1933 Kong does not contain Jackson's seven-part documentary on the original film. The documentary was available on the initial DVD.

Fox is taking direct aim at Universal's monster in its ads, bearing the taglines, "It takes more than one ape to rule" and "Who's the king now?" The Ultimate DVD Collection swings into stores with all five original Planet of the Apes movies, the 2001 remake, the animated TV series and a limited edition ape bust.

Sony’s Godzilla Monster Edition comes with new bonus features and episodes from the Godzilla: The Series TV show.

War of the Apes, zo blijkt.

"... we're now hearing that Peter Jackson and Universal may be planning a King Kong: Extended Edition as well. Arnaud Calistri, the editor of the French DVD news site DVDRama, e-mailed me yesterday to say that Universal France has just confirmed that a deluxe King Kong "box set edition" is being prepared for DVD release in November of this year, and that it will feature a new edit of the film itself. France will also be getting the same two editions the studio just announced for release here in the States on 3/28, but not until August. We're working with our own sources to try and confirm this, but it definitely seems like a possibility given Jackson's track record with his Lord of the Rings extended DVDs."

We're doing the extended cut of King Kong for release later this year on DVD and it's finally going to answer that 70-year-old question, of how did they get King Kong back to New York, so here's a little sneak previews for you and I'll say goodbye.

Shot of ship heading back to New York, gradually pans away to reveal Kong clinging on to the back.
