Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!) is scheduled to begin principal photography in July or August on his Australian-set period epic starring Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, reports Production Weekly.

The site says rehearsals start in May on the romance that is being compared to Gone With the Wind. It is set around the time of World War II and will be shot in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia on a set created from scratch by Luhrmann.

Luhrmann is collaborating with Collateral screenwriter and fellow Aussie Stuart Beattie on the film, which is expected to be made through 20th Century Fox.

Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!) has confirmed to The Australian that his untitled period epic starring Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe is currently awaiting a green light from Fox. The film was previously expected to start shooting this summer. Here's a clip:

But this very combination, the film's World War II setting and the difficulties of shooting in remote locations - it is an epic romance and the Kimberley and the Queensland town of Bowen have been mentioned as possible locations - means 20th Century Fox will not give production the green light until it is confident that the huge investment will pay off.

"To say that it is a complex and large-scale undertaking is an understatement and I cannot formally announce the project until all of the crucial elements are secure," said the director of Moulin Rouge, Romeo+Juliet and Strictly Ballroom.

"Currently, they are not, and so it is true we've had to disengage some of our very loyal team. As soon as we are able to bring those crucial elements together I will be able to make a formal announcement concerning the starting date of the production, at which time it will also be named."

The full article, which is available at the link below, mentions that the romantic epic begins in the mid-1930s and ends with its major set-piece, the 1942-43 Japanese bombing of Darwin.

Russell Crowe, who said yes long ago to starring with Nicole Kidman in director Baz Luhrmann's (Moulin Rouge!) untitled Australian period epic for 20th Century Fox, departed last week after disagreements with the studio.

Variety says that reports that have Heath Ledger replacing Crowe are not accurate. In fact, the Brokeback Mountain star passed on the role.

Kidman and Luhrmann are still attached to the project, which Fox is going forward with.

Hugh Jackman, just off the record-breaking success of X-Men: The Last Stand, has agreed to star with Nicole Kidman in writer-director Baz Luhrmann's as yet untitled epic.

Jackman, one of today's most in-demand and busiest talents, chose the Luhrmann film over the myriad projects he has been offered in recent weeks. His next film set for release, Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, is already receiving strong critical buzz. Also awaiting release for the actor are Woody Allen's Scoop and Christopher Nolan's The Prestige.

Luhrmann's film, a romantic action-adventure set in northern Australia prior to World War II, centers on an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a ranch the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle driver (Jackman) to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country's most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier.

With his new film, Luhrmann is painting on a vast canvass, creating a cinematic experience that brings together romance, drama, adventure and spectacle.

The film begins pre-production October 2006 and production commences in Australia in February 2007. A third lead, a dark rival for the heroine's love and land, will be announced shortly.

The Age reports that Moulin Rouge! director Baz Luhrmann has announced the title of his new epic film starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman.

"The name is shocking," Lurhmann said with a laugh. "It's called 'Australia.'"

The site says that the film has received the green light from 20th Century Fox. There will be a workshop at Sydney's Fox Studios before Christmas, with the cast working on riding, costumes, the script and test scenes. Filming will start in the Kimberley in March and take five months.

The title Australia was chosen over "Great Southern Land" and "Faraway Downs," the name of the homestead in the film.

"I'm taking the perspective of the rest of the world to this film how they might view 'Australia,'" Luhrmann said. "When you say 'Casablanca' or 'Oklahoma!' it means big. It means vast... I'm not saying this film is Australia. It's a metaphor for a state of mind, for the faraway."

"What people tend not to know is that more tonnage of bombs were dropped by the same attack force on Darwin as Pearl Harbor. They bombed Darwin 64 times. We were completely lied to in the south about it."

With a budget of $120m (£77m) and an A-list cast including Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, director Baz Luhrmann's new movie Australia promised a Titanic-style blockbuster from an epic tale of adventure across the outback.

After "intense" discussions with officials at 20th Century Fox, Luhrmann agreed to rewrite the final scenes to keep alive Kidman's love interest, played by Hugh Jackman.

The decision was made after negative responses to the movie's initial cut at test screenings.

One reviewer said: "There is no reason to kill off Wolvie [Jackman played Wolverine in the X-Men trilogy]."

Apart from sparing the audience the extra cost of tissues, the studio apparently felt that a more uplifting ending would spell greater success at the box office.

The film stars Kidman as an English aristocrat who inherits a cattle ranch in Australia at the start of the second world war. After rival owners plot to seize her land, she teams up with a cattle drover, played by Jackman, to lead thousands of animals across the country, only to face bombing from the Japanese.

The two fall in love during their epic journey although, in Luhrmann's first cut, Jackman's character later dies.

The movie will open in the US and Australia this month, and in the UK on Boxing Day, with the new, happier ending and not, as one critic described it, as "an action-filled tragedy".

The decision has angered some Australian film fans. One wrote on Australia's Sunday Telegraph's website: "Baz clearly has no control of his film, or no ethics when it comes to putting the story he wanted to tell to the screen."

The rewritten ending is latest in a series of setbacks to affect the movie.

Actor Russell Crowe originally agreed to fill Jackman's role but pulled out, and filming was delayed by the worst weather in Western Australia in 100 years then an outbreak of equine flu. "There was nothing that could have happened that didn't," Luhrmann said.

For the soundtrack to the film artist and singer Rolf Harris has recorded his legendary wobble boardfor the opening credits of the film. Harris, 78 put the finishing touches on the track at a studio in Harrow, north-west London, this week.

He said: "Apparently Baz Luhrmann suddenly said, 'This is crazy. We haven't got the iconic sound of Rolf Harris's wobble board on the music. We must be mad'."

Ugh, dit slaat weer nergens op, nu krijgen we zeker een zoet Amerikaans einde waar ze trouwen en nog lang en gelukkig leven....

wat wel een geluk is is dat ze waarschijnlijk de scenes wel al gefilmd hadden en we ze misschien op de dvd tegen komen.

Ze zijn daar bij Fox echt wel slecht bezig de laatste tijd moest het inderdaad zo zijn dat ze ook bij deze film de beslissingen van de regisseur weer niet respecteren. Maar Luhrmann zelf zegt wel dat hij op het laatste moment nog een paar dingen moest editen, zonder iets te zeggen over een nieuw einde.

Sowieso is mijn interesse voor Australia maar matig, de films van Luhrmann zeggen me niet zoveel. Maar met een beetje geluk heeft het wat weg van Cold Mountain, die andere epische film met Kidman die me wel verrassend goed beviel overlaatst.

Gisteren gezien en hoewel ik Australia met plezier heb bekeken, viel de film viel helaas toch een beetje tegen. Australia is een epische film in de stijl van Gone with the Wind, maar komt nogal rommelig over (heeft wellicht te maken met de invloed van de studio) en bevat de nodige clichés (met name de personages). Baz Luhrmann weet wel hoe hij zijn vaderland mooi in beeld moet brengen, want de film ziet er weer prachtig uit. Hier ligt dan ook de kracht van Australia. Ondanks dat de film toch al 166 minuten duurt, heb ik het idee dat de film baat zou hebben bij een nog langere speelduur. 7,0

Zeven jaar na het briljante Mouin Rouge! komt Baz Luhrmann eindelijk met z`n nieuwe film. Het heeft dan erg lang mogen duren, maar het gelukkig is het het wachten meer dan waard geweest.

Bijna alle genres die je in een film kunt mengen komen hier voorbij: drama, comedy, avontuur, western, oorlog, geschiedenis film. Nooit komt het geforceerd over, het loopt als een goed geoliede machine. Alles vloeit vlotjes in elkaar over. Het resultaat is een epische film die tot in de puntjes verzorgd is, waarbij over ieder detail is nagedacht.
Het verhaal mag dan wellicht wel voorspelbaar zijn maar door de mix van sterk acteerwerk van Kidman en Jackman en de adembenemende cinematografie neem je dat voor lief.
Sommige shots zien er wat kitscherig uit, wat overdreven of dik aangezet misschien. Maar dat past juist perfect bij de sfeer van het geheel en doet dus geen afbreuk aan de film.
De epische speelduur van 2 uur en 45 minuten klinkt alsof het een lange zit is, maar dat valt ontzettend mee.De film is over voordat je er erg in hebt. Er zijn ook niet echt scenes waarbij je het gevoel hebt dat ze overbodig zijn of de film onnodig lang maken en er dus uit hadden gemogen.

Australia is dan wellicht niet zo`n instant klassieker geworden zoals Moulin Rouge, maar desalniettemin is het een absoluut pareltje. Hij komt dan ook vast en zeker hoog in het lijstje met favorieten films van het jaar.

Australia is eigenlijk een mengelmoes van verschillende genres waarin op de achtergrond van een liefdesverhaal de (recente) Australische geschiedenis aan bod komt. De beelden zijn prachtig geschoten, echter slaat Luhrmann af en toe wel door en zijn het wel erg overdreven shots (vooral het gebruik slomotion en fast forward). Dat gaat overigens niet alleen op voor de regie, ook het plot en de acteerprestaties zijn af en toe wat over-the-top, cliche en erg zoetsappig. En dan het volgende minpunt, de speelduur. Daar had men naar mijn mening best vanaf mogen halen, twee uur van lang genoeg geweest en dan had je het (toch wel wat magere) verhaal ook niet tekort gedaan. Bovenstaande wil zeker niet zeggen dat het een slechte film is, alleen had men er meer uit kunnen halen. Misschien wou Luhrman nu wel wat te veel in deze film stoppen, waardoor hij nergens echt uitblinkt (in zowel positieve als negatieve zin). 7.5

Er zijn nog niet zoveel grote films gemaakt in Australië en in deze film is het ook echt het land en haar originele inwoners die centraal staan. Het is weer een opmerkelijke mix geworden van drama, romantiek, actie en de nodige humor. Kidman en Jackman zijn geknipt voor hun rollen en ook het kleine jongetje houdt zich goed staan. De beelden van het land zijn eveneens prachtig. Toch kent de film een groot probleem, de bordkartonnen badguys die in Luhrmann's vorige films zo goed werkten zijn hier onbedoeld grappig. Hierdoor komt de rol van Fletcher niet goed uit de verf, ondanks het feit dat Wenham prima acteert. Daarnaast duurde de film véél te lang. Elke scène mag dan wel een functie hebben, maar als geheel is het gewoon teveel voor één film. 7,2
