This looks amazing....

special features
Shrek, the computer animation hit from PDI and DreamWorks, and based on William Steig’s children’s book, has arrived on DVD and is even more entertaining than before thanks to a delightful array of bonus material.

Disc One of the two-disc release includes a 1.33:1 full screen edition of the film (for those who just can’t put up with the “annoying black bars”) and half of the supplemental content. There is a Cast section which includes the usual cast bio information but adds what is perhaps the most entertaining extra on the DVD: “interviews” with the characters in the film. If you’re a widescreen supporter, don’t skip Disc One thinking there’s only the full screen version of the movie. There’s so much more than that! Also included is an amusing segment called Shrek In The Swamp Karaoke Dance Party which runs about three minutes. There are two games: Shrektacular Trivia and Mirror, Mirror On The Wall, and a DreamWorks Kids section (partially hidden) which includes segments on Favorite Scenes, Shrek’s Music Room and The Game Swamp. Shrek’s Music Room includes two music videos (and a making-of) one by Baha Men, the other by Smash Mouth. Also included on Disc One is an HBO First Look featurette running 25 minutes, a host of DVD-ROM features, and a trailer for next year’s DreamWorks animated release Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron.

Moving over to Disc Two you’ll find the widescreen version of the movie, only this time a DTS® Digital Surround™ soundtrack option has been added (the full screen version offers only Dolby® Digital). Included here is an audio commentary track featuring producer Aron Werner and directors Vicky Jenson and Andrew Adamson. Three scenes are included in a Storyboard Pitch Of Deleted Scenes. The Tech Of Shrek is a 22-minute featurette on the making of the movie. Also included are X-Box Game Playing Hints, Technical Goofs (amusing) and Production Notes (same text as the info found on Disc One, though the layout is different). Additionally, there’s a two-minute featurette on the foreign dub versions of the movie, a Cast List (also including the same info as on Disc One, minus the “interviews”), a Filmmakers List (again, same as on Disc One), and a Progression Reel, which is a fascinating conceptual artwork segment focusing on the characters in the film. And, also included on Disc Two are the film’s trailer and additional DVD-ROM content. A hidden feature on Disc Two is Shrek In The Swamp Karaoke Dance Party, which was also included on Disc One...but it’s worth seeing twice!

DreamWorks has put together an outstanding package capturing the spirit of the movie that will no doubt entertain its audience, which is bound to grow considerably in the DVD home video afterlife. What is noteworthy is that DreamWorks has created content exclusive to the DVD, including new film material for the disc menus, in a really short amount of time given that the disc is hitting the street less than six months after its theatrical release. And it’s not just “stuff” thrown on the disc&most of it is genuinely entertaining, and will be for both kids and adults. The only negative is that some of the material is duplicated on the two discs, but that is a very minor quibble. A lot of entertaining material spread out on two discs for only $19.95! (Michael Coate)

Story Synopsis:
Once upon a time in a far away swamp, there lived an ornery ogre named Shrek (Myers) whose precious swampy solitude was suddenly shattered by an invasion of annoying fairy tale characters. There are blind mice on his table, a big, bad wolf in his bed, three bedless bears, and three little homeless pigs, not to mention the rest who are banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad (Lithgow). Determined to save their home, not to mention his own, Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona (Diaz) to be Farquaad’s bride. Accompanying him on his mission is a wisecracking Donkey (Murphy) who will do anything for Shrek, except shut up. Rescuing the Princess from a fire-breathing dragon may prove the least of their problems when the secret she has been keeping is revealed! No fairy tale character is sacred (nor famous movie lines for that matter)&what a riot! Adults will enjoy all the subtle jokes aimed at them, while flying straight over the kids’ heads. Based on the book by William Steig. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The 1.78:1 all-digital transfer of Shrek is nothing short of impressive. Detail in the computer animation is astounding. Contrast and “shadow delineation” is nearly perfect and quite "natural." From the solid blue sky, vibrant yellow sunflowers, Shrek’s green skin, and deep blacks, hues are gorgeously rendered. Detail is excellent, from the threads in Shrek’s shirt to the hairs on the Donkey’s coat. Distractions will not be a factor on this disc. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The 5.1-channel soundtracks offer an enlightening, animated listening experience, along with excellent fidelity. The dimensional scope, however, is generally conservative, with a noticeable balance toward the screen. The surrounds are usually engaged subtly to moderately, with a few moments for which they become prominent and bring the soundstage alive (such as the fiery encounter with the dragon in Chapter 7). Otherwise, the restrained utilization of surround envelopment seems more than would be expected. While the use of deep bass is certainly powerful at times and even system-threatening, with sub-25 Hz extension in the main channels, the use of the .1 LFE is very limited, and in fact, there is little in the way of such activity with the roars and rumbles of the dragon in Chapter 7. The music score has been very nicely recorded, and its presence across the screen is sweeping and engaging, and sometimes filling the listening space all around the listener. Voices have remarkably natural fidelity, but the studio-type ambience from an ADR production is noticeable. The DTS® Digital Surround™ soundtrack delivers just slightly more refinement in terms of midrange tonal detail. Otherwise, both versions offer a soundstage that is somewhat less spatially immersive than expected, but nonetheless should have plenty to satisfy and entertain. (Perry Sun)
