March 26, 2002 - New Line Cinema just announced the full specs and release date for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on DVD. The DVD will street on August 6 for a MSRP of $29.99 and will hold the following features in a two-disc set:
Three behind-the-scenes featurettes:
-"Welcome to Middle-earth" (an in-store special shown by Houghton Mifflin).
-"The Quest for the Ring" (30-minute special originally shown on the FOX Network).
-"A Passage to Middle-earth" (60-minute special originally shown on the SCI-FI Channel).
15 featurettes originally created for lordoftherings.net. These take you deep inside Middle Earth and include interviews with cast members Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler as well as members of the crew. Each one originally was shown as a streaming video or a quicktime file, so now you have them in the form of high-quality video.

More time with the Hobbits including a musical number. Extra scene further underscores the Hobbits sense of isolation and the growing realization that they can't ignore the outside world for much longer.

Gifting scene ... as the Fellowship leaves, Galadriel gives them each a personalized gift that will end up being critical to their future. Legolas gets a special bow, Sam gets some elvin rope that comes in handy when he faces a giant spider in The Two Towers, and a touching moment between Gimli and Galadriel.
The extended edition will likely receive an "R"-rating , not due to excessive gore but about 30 seconds of extra violence in the Battle of Amon Hen.
Two discs contain the film and the remaining two discs add up to more than six hours of additional content. Among the content will be Peter Jackson's commentary. More details to come on the exact nature of the extras content as New Line is still finalizing the details.
Finally, there is an awesome Collector's DVD Gift Set also streeting on November 12 that looks amazing. It is a huge, gorgeous box designed by the legendary Alan Lee. The gift set contains the 4-disc version, two bookend statuettes by sculptor Sideshow Weta, the National Geographic "Beyond The Movie" DVD, and several collectible Decipher game cards. No word on price as of this writing. We'll update as we receive the info.

Geen DTS track..dat is natuurlijk minder..Weet iemand welke maatschappij deze film uitbrengt (toch niet Warner he?). Bij Universal en Fox kunnen we nog wel een goede DTS track verwachten.

Die DTS zal dan -lijkt me- wel op de SE verschijnen, die wordt immers over 2 DVD's verspreid. Hiervan zijn de specs nnb.
Maar die trilogy box vind ik toch te lang wachten, en met een 4-disc gift set ben ik ook al zeer tevreden. Dit is gewoon een gigantische commerciële melkkoe, dus dat er zoveel releases van zijn verbaasd me niks. Kijk alleen al eens naar de verschillende versies van het boek en alle merchandise....
Ik zie het allemaal wel, ik hoop alleen dat ze alles ruim vantevoren aankondigen, dus niet een Gift Set een maand na de SE zonder aankodiging. Dat noem ik pas wél naaijerij (:rolleyes: )
Ik denk zelf dat we hier ook geen DTS track krijgen, als de R1 het al niet eens krijgt dan kunne wij het wel helemaal vergete. Zal me nix verbaze als we dalijk met een DD2.0 opgescheept zitten :p beetje overdreven, maar toch
En over die trilogybox.....ik vind dat ook zeker iets te ver weg! ben nie van plan om tot 2004 te wachte totdat er een ULTIMATESPECIALCOLLECTORSLIMITEDNAAIONSALLEMAALMAA RFLINKEDITIONBOX uit komt.

Ik denk dat er een hele simpele verklaring is waarom er geen DTS track aanwezig is. Schijfruimte!!! Een DTS track zou bij een film die zo lang is als LOTR teveel schijfruimte wegvreten die anders kan worden gebruikt voor de beeldkwaliteit.

waar heb je dat geleze??? en komt de R1 dan niet in DTS??? De R1 heeft geen DTS track. Dat geld zowel voor de 2-disc Theatrical Edition, 4-disc Special Extended Edition en the Collector's Gift Set.
Of de R2 dan ook een DTS track krijg?? Tja wat moet A-Film dan doen om New Line te kunnen overtuigen om een DTS track erop te zetten. New Line zelf doet het dus niet op hun R1 versie.
New Line mag dan niks aan DTS doen, EIV (UK Regio 2) doet het iig wel. R2 Project (http://www.r2-dvd.org/article.jsp?sectionId=7&articleId=3789) meld het volgende:

Ik ga toch allebei de versies kopen, de tweede versie in giftset natuurlijk Ik doe wel met je mee...want er zitten toch 4 maanden tussen. Heb ik hem wel 2 keer, maar ja, dat is het wel waard (wat is nu €30......op 4 maanden).
Ben er ook al over aan het denken om te gaan sparen voor zo'n versterker met 6 uitgangen, als je toch "fully enhanced DTS 6.1" geluid krijgt. Koop ik meteen wat goeds en heb ik een schitterende DVD om te testen. Wordt dus ff sparen, want die dingen zijn niet goedkoop. En £44.99 rrp voor die giftset ook niet (zal nog wel iets omlaag gaan...), maar dat is zeker een must have...en een leuk kadootje voor mezelf om te vieren dat die LOTR giftset uitkomt. Wordt november alweer een duur maandje, want Band of Brothers komt dan ook en die zal ook zeker nie goedkoop zijn. De commercie heeft ons weer goed te pakken!
Misschien moeten we afspreken om het tot die tijd niet meer over LOTR en BoB te hebben, dan gaat de tijd misschien sneller...;) :cool: :D

The same for me en de box met alledrie de delen!!!!:D :D :D Die haal ik alleen als ie écht iets toevoegd, bijvoorbeeld een extended DC ofzo (met 1 uur extra footage per deel). Misschien wel Tom Bombadil die ze na de derde film nog apart opnemen ofzo (en stukken die uit de andere delen zijn gelaten). Is de trilogy boxset niks extra's die het geld waard is (want hij zal wel duur zijn), dan ben ook ook wel tevreden met 3 giftsets.
Moeten ze uiteraard wel alle 3 de films even goed behandelen, maar dat zal wel van het succes afhangen.

Domme vragen zijn er niet, wel domme antwoorden. Het kan dus gewoon wel!! :)
Nog wat aanvullingen op de aanvullende scènes voor de 4 disc-versie (van www.tolkienonline.com):
*A new addition to the opening sequence in which Bilbo provides background on Hobbits and their history in voice-over as he writes his memoirs.
*A new introduction to Samwise Gamgee, seen in his capacity as a gardener.
*A scene taking place at the Green Dragon Inn, which introduces us to the camaraderie of the Hobbits (we see them singing together) and sets up the geopolitics of the story.
*The Hobbits witnessing the departure of the Elves from Middle Earth on the way to Bree.
*Aragorn watching over the sleeping Hobbits, singing the ballad of Beren and Luthien to himself in the night.
*Aragorn at his mother's grave, in which we learn that he was raised by Elves and that Sauron has long hunted him.
*Two new moments during the departure from Rivendale, one in which we see Arwen's emotional reaction to Aragorn's leaving, and another in which Elrond sees the Fellowship off.
*A scene with the Fellowship in the mines of Moria, in which we learn how the Dwarves themselves unleashed the fire-demon that eventually destroyed them.
*A scene at Lothlorien, where Galadriel bestows upon each of the Fellowship a gift which will play an important role later in the Trilogy.
*And finally, more footage of the battle at Amon Hen. This is not particularly bloody footage, but its addition will likely result in this cut of the film receiving an R-rating.

Maar het zal echt wel iets toevoegen dat de moeite waard is. Misschien maken ze "The Hobbit" nog eerst wel en verkopen ze die alleen bij de boxset (stelletje naaiers -dan-)........

Denk niet dat ik speciaal daarvoor ga, want er worden alleen wat nieuwe karakters geintroduceert en die kan ik op Internet ook zien. Dit is namelijk echte naaierij waarvoor ik niet ga betalen. Op de DVD sttaan straks 10 minuten preview.
Maar ik hoor graag een uitgebreide recensie van je -over die extra 5 minuten-!!:cool:

Some disturbing news from the BBFC today could lead to problems with the November announced 4-disc set of Lord Of The Rings. A recent policy decision at the British Censorship Board means that two versions of the same title may not be on sale at the same time with different certificates. Some high profile titles have fallen foul of this ruling in the past and only after a sufficient period of waiting have titles like Terminator 2 and Die Hard With A Vengeance been allowed to be re-released uncut.
The reason this affects Lord Of The Rings is due to the proposed 4-disc Special Edition which contains an additional 30 minutes of footage. There has been some speculation that additional footage, particularly of fight sequences at the battle at Amon Hen, could be sufficiently bloody enough to earn the US release an R-rating, the equivalent of an 18 certificate in the UK. If this is the case, then the BBFC will insist that these violent scenes are cut from the film to maintain parity with the previously released PG version.
A BBFC spokesman told us today: "Under "current" policy [the UK distributor] couldn't have a higher rated version. Of course, policies can change but we don't foresee any change to this particular policy in the near future. Basically, our position is that any alternative version would have to be suitable for a 'PG' certificate. But we haven't seen anything that leads us to believe the extra footage proposed is likely to be more violent - just 'extra' footage."
This assurance will come as cold comfort to those unsure of which version to buy and it remains to be seen whether Entertainment In Video themselves have thought this far ahead. With the second 'extended' version still in post-production, it will be a long time before EiV get to see a copy, let alone submit it to the BBFC for approval. We could be in for a long wait to hear the definitive answer to this one.

And finally... some good news. In fact, we've saved the best for last. We've contacted New Line after receiving a lot of questions from readers about this very issue. They tell us that The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring - Special Extended Edition 4-disc set due in November will TENTATIVELY feature a DTS audio option in addition to the Dolby Digital 5.1 EX track. Before you bombard us with more questions, no... we don't know if it will be ES 6.1. Having DTS on the extended version is ONLY planned at this time - there are no other details (official or otherwise) available. New Line can only confirm that they are indeed working to have DTS on the 4-disc set. A lot depends on the actual production (the tentative nature of this is likely due to concerns over disc space/quality issues - making sure the film looks great split over 2 discs with both DTS and Dolby Digital audio included). New Line has, however, told me that they expect to confirm the DTS option for sure sometime later this summer. Still, tentatively very good news. Keep your ring fingers crossed... ;)

Maar ik neem aan dat die 4-disc gift set ook gewoon in Nederland -en zeker in Australië- uitkomt en die hebben dat gezeik niet. Zou toch te gek worden als er geknipt wordt door een stelletje ouwelullen in een Director's CUT verzie....:mad:

Dit is echt geweldig nieuws. Ik koop meteen de 4-disc versie in november en huur hem daarvoor wel ff een keer om mijn honger te stillen :D
Alleen wel jammer dat de film op 2 schijfjes is verspreid, maar lijkt me ook logisch als je kijkt naar de lengte en de DD en DTS track.
En ook leuk dat er een 4-disc komt van Pearl Harbor, heb ik dit jaar 2 films die op 4 glimmende schijfjes uitkomen :)

Je moet wel twee keer het beeld erop zetten, maar dat lijkt me nie zo'n probleem. En de commentaartrack kan dan bij de DD6.1 EX track, want die zal wel minder ruimte innemen dan de DTS track.
Snap niet dat ze het dan niet zo doen :confused:

Although director Peter Jackson has promised an expanded DVD release of "The Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring," his most important work on the project may remain under wraps.
Variety reports that, when Jackson's planned adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy classic ran into trouble with original financiers Miramax, Jackson financed his own 30-minute, $50,000 film explaining his vision for the film.
That short film, which has only been seen by a handful of movie-industry insiders, proved to be decisive in getting the trilogy bankrolled, Variety said.
When Miramax balked at going forward with the film, they kicked the project back to Jackson, but on prohibitive terms. He had to repay the $12 million the studio had already spent on developing the film and forfeit 5% of the gross. He also had a mere three weeks to find a new backer.
Variety said Jackson returned to New Zealand and put together a summary of his film, narrated by himself. The short demonstrated special effects, displayed the armour and weapons created for the film, and used storyboards and actors' voices to convey key action scenes from the film.
"So here we are, 45 years after the publication of this book, where finally the technology has caught up to the incredible imagination that Tolkien injected into this story of his," Variety quoted Jackson's closing comments in the short. "This movie can be made".
The mini-movie must have worked beyond Jackson's dreams. New Line rejected the director's proposal to retell "Rings" as two films, and instead bankrolled a trilogy.
Variety said no decision has been made yet on whether Jackson's appeal will be available to the public.
Dit lijkt me nu eens een coole extra en hoop zeker dattie beschikbaar komt voor het publiek...op de 4-disc gift set. Hiermee krijg je een mooi beeld van het creative proces dat vooraf gaat aan het maken van een giga project als LOTR. Dus duim met me mee....
