Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Oscar-nominated Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain) will star in Synecdoche, Oscar winner Charlie Kaufman's (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) directorial debut.
Production Weekly says the film centers on an anguished playwright and several women in his life. Synecdoche is "a figure of speech in which the word for part of something is used to mean the whole."
Filming is set to begin in early summer 2007.

Theater director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is mounting a new play. Fresh off of a successful production of Death of a Salesman, he has traded in the suburban blue-hairs and regional theater of Schenectady for the cultured audiences and bright footlights of Broadway. Armed with a MacArthur grant and determined to create a piece of brutal realism and honesty, something into which he can put his whole self, he gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in Manhattan's theater district. He directs them in a celebration of the mundane, instructing each to live out their constructed lives in a small mockup of the city outside. As the city inside the warehouse grows, Caden's own life veers wildly off the tracks. The shadow of his ex-wife Adele (Catherine Keener), a celebrated painter who left him years ago for Germany's art scene, sneers at him from every corner. Somewhere in Berlin, his daughter Olive is growing up under the questionable guidance of Adele's friend, Maria (Jennifer Jason Leigh). He's helplessly driving his marriage to actress Claire (Michelle Williams) into the ground. Sammy Barnathan (Tom Noonan), the actor Caden has hired to play himself within the play, is a bit too perfect for the part, and is making it difficult for Caden to revive his relationship with the alluringly candid Hazel (Samantha Morton). Meanwhile, his therapist, Madeline Gravis (Hope Davis), is better at plugging her best-seller than she is at counseling him. His is second daughter, Ariel, is retarded. And a mysterious condition is systematically shutting down each of his autonomic functions, one by one. As the years rapidly pass, Caden buries himself deeper into his masterpiece. Populating the cast and crew with doppelgangers, he steadily blurs the line between the world of the play and that of his own deteriorating reality. As he pushes the limits of his relationships, both personally and professionally, a change in creative direction arrives in Millicent Weems, a celebrated theater actress who may offer Caden the break he needs. By seamlessly blending together subjective point-of-views with traditional narrative structures, writer/director Charlie Kaufman has created a world of superbly unsteady footing. His richly developed cast of characters flutter between moments of warm intimacy and frightful insecurity, creating a script that brings to life all the complex and beautiful nuances of shared life and artistic creation. ik ben erg benieuwd naar deze film.
Wil deze film erg graag zien aangezien de goede recensies. Maar het is wel erg stil in dit topic, terwijl het volgens mij een film is waarover genoeg gediscussieerd kan worden.
Ik ben hier ook erg benieuwd naar. Charlie Kaufman heeft me wat scripts betreft nog niet teleurgesteld, en de zeer goede cast spreekt me ook aan. Ik wacht echter wel gewoon op de Amerikaanse Blu-Ray die in maart uitkomt. Met een beetje geluk is die regiovrij. Jammer dat dit soort films altijd zo laat hier worden uitgebracht.

Of dus helemaal niet... Je moet vaak al in de randstad wonen om dit soort films te kunnen zien op het grote scherm.

Wat moeten al die blaadjes voor stellen?
Is hij in Engeland ook al in de bios geweest?
Volgens IMDb wordt hij pas wijd uitgebracht in Mei, ze konden geen distributeur vinden voor de film. En dan moet de Blu-Ray daar nog uitkomen.
Dat shot komt uit de film, Hoffman speelt een theater regisseur. die blaadjes zijn post-it's met notities aan iedere acteur
Ik heb de film kunnen zien (ik zag dat de film maar in 2 zalen draait).
Ik vond het een interressante film met een mooie boodschap. Ik moet wel zeggen dat het een stuk vager en moeilijker te volgen is dan de vorige films die hij heeft geschreven.
Maar het bleef vermakelijk en ik kreeg dus wel het idee dat de boodschap die Kaufman wilde vertellen overkwam.
Al iets bekend over een Nederlande DVD/Blu-ray release?
Geen flauw idee of hij uberhaupt op Blu-Ray uitgebracht wordt. Ik importeer hem maar, duurt mij te lang.

Alweer zo'n film die veels te weinig aandacht krijgt. In hoeveel copieën heeft deze film in Nederland gedraaid? Zal de film ter zijner tijd in Heerlen een herkansing geven. Heeft buiten Maastricht nergens in Limburg gedraaid. Trieste zaak.. :sad:
Net deze film op tv gezien. Ik ben een grote liefhebber van Kaufman maar deze had ik gemist in de bios en nog niet tegengekomen op dvd. Nu zie ik deze op play.com http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/9712295/Synecdoche-New-York/Product.html maar ik kan nergens vinden wat de extra's op disc 2 (en eventueel 1) staan. Heeft iemand enig idee? En zitten er NL subs op deze UK versie?

In & Around Synecdoche, New YorkMaar in de UK staan ze op een tweede schijf om de prijs wat hoger te maken. Dat en ze hebben de film een afgrijselijke cover gegeven. Ik kon alleen niet vinden wat de subs waren, maar ik denk dat er geen Nederlandse subs op staan. Volgens mij liggen de rechten bij elk land bij een andere distributeur.

O nee? Ik heb 'm anders voor het eerst gezien in het filmhuis in Venlo. En godsamme, wat ben ik daar blij om! (y) Na 'm nog een keertje midden in de nacht toevallig op Film1 tegen te zijn gekomen kan ik dan ook met een gerust hart zeggen: deze film is geniaal.
Alleen: hoe zit het met de dvd-uitgave die alhier in de winkels te vinden is? Ik kan nergens zien of er ook extra's op staan, en zo ja, welke. Ik wil deze film namelijk wel erg graag hebben, maar dan natuurlijk wel het liefst met een extraatje of twee, drie, gezien het verhaal zo ontzettend moeilijk en diep is dat wat uitleg niet ongewenst is.
