Gisteren had ik voor de tweede keer The Valley of Gwangi gezien en 't was weer genieten! Een western met dinosauriërs, uiterst vermakelijk met onvergetelijke stop-motion effecten van Ray Harryhausen. Het is overduidelijk dat de makers van de Jurassic Park-reeks zich lieten beïnvloeden door deze film. Neem bijvoorbeeld de scène waarin de cowboys Gwangi vangen met lasso's, dat inspireerde Spielberg en z'n team om een soortgelijke scène te creëren in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Groot verschil is wel dat de special effects van die films geproduceerd zijn door honderd man achter de computer, maar bij deze werd dat gedaan door één man - zonder computers. Respect dus voor Mr. Harryhausen!

Deze zomer was ik in Berlijn en in het filmmuseum aldaar is zo'n beetje een complete verdieping aan de man gewijd. Prachtige tentoonstelling met scripts, filmbeelden, complete miniatuurwerelden.

Deze zomer was ik in Berlijn en in het filmmuseum aldaar is zo'n beetje een complete verdieping aan de man gewijd. Prachtige tentoonstelling met scripts, filmbeelden, complete miniatuurwerelden.Ben ik ook vorig jaar geweest, zag er goed uit idd, ik heb me daar een goede tijd vermaakt.
Van Harryhausen heb ik niet lang geleden Jason and the Argonauts gezien. Leuke film, vooral het gevecht met de skeletten is geweldig.

Misschien een leuke trivia; de piano die Victor bespeeld in de stop-motion film "Corps bride" is een echte "Haryhausen" , 3x raden wie Burton hier een knipoog wil geven.... :twisted:

'n Documentaire van Paul Davids, die ooit samen met de legendarische producent George Pal 'n filmversie van Tolkien's The Hobbit zou gaan maken, maar 't ging niet door omdat de studio's geen interesse toonden.

Met vele interviews van o.a. Peter Jackson, John Landis, Rick Baker, Roger Corman, Bob Burns, Leonard Maltin en Dennis Muren.

Leuk zijn ook de beelden van enkele amateurfilmpjes die sommige filmmakers in hun jeugd hadden gedraaid, geïnspireerd door 't werk van Harryhausen en de Famous Monsters of Filmland magazines van Forrest J. Ackerman.

Tevens wordt er aandacht besteed aan de hechte vriendschap tussen Ackerman, Harryhausen en sci-fi auteur Ray Bradbury.

Ik zit nog steeds te twijfelen over The Early Years, ook al heb ik wel al zijn reguliere filmwerk (hoofdzakelijk op R1 - muv Clash Of The Titans) en geniet al meer dan 25 jaar van zijn stop-motion!

Is een van de Harryhausen-fans bekend met Jack The Giant Killer? Ik heb tegenstrijdige berichten gelezen, maar over het algemeen is goedkope Harryhausen-rip-off' de meest gelezen kreet.
Ik ben benieuwd.

Nooit van gehoord, maar lijkt me wel leuk :)

Ik heb hem toevallig (nou ja, toevallig?) vandaag binnen gekregen, samen met de 3e box van de Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea serie, en nadat ik die bekeken heb zal ik reuzendoder-Jack een kans geven. Jack wordt gespeeld door Sinbad uit de 7th Voyage en ook zijn tegenspeelster en regisseur van die film werkten mee aan Jack. Nou, we zullen wel zien.

En mochten er nog tips rondslingeren voor andere Harryhausen-klonen, dan hoor ik dat graag!

Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea bevat naast de typische jaren '60 uitraling ook veel fantasy-elementen en monsters die leven op de zeebodem, etc. Waarschijnlijk spreekt de gemiddelde Harryhausen-fan dit ook wel aan.

H. G. WELLS’ THINGS TO COME (Ray Harryhausen Presents In Color)

If you’re like me – you already have a version of THINGS TO COME – in its original Black & White. And I know… Colorizing is Evil. However, this colorizing was overseen by Ray Harryhausen and this isn’t our old school Ted Turner colorizing – this is something entirely new… NOW – I’m not suggesting buying this over the black and white version. That is the original and best way to see this film. THAT SAID – this is gorgeous to look at. Ray is an enormous fan of William Cameron Menzies… and Ray loves these films as much as any living being ever. This is an absolute wonder to look at and none of the reviews on AMAZON are in reference to this color work. One of the great science fiction films of all time!

SHE (1935) (Ray Harryhausen Presents In Color)

Ok – Same thing here. If you have that stunning KINO VIDEO release of SHE in it’s gorgeous black and white photography – there’s a couple of reasons to get this version. For one – it’s a longer cut of the film. Two – Ray Harryhausen over saw the color process and it is – again – stunning. If you’re like me, you’ll have both versions of this classic from Merian Cooper’s producing career. It’s worth owning, if only to just hear Max Steiner’s score with the film. The score is that great. Also – the action is stunning and surprising. The scale of the film is so much bigger than you expect when you watch it. And the color… GORGEOUS. I’m a real fan of this technique, but I’m also a fan of the original black and white. Ray is doing a magnificent job of restory and revitalizing some of his favorites that time has forgotten. Great film!

Een 6-disc met de filmhits van special effects-artiest Ray Harryhausen boordevol extra's

Nadat hij op dertienjarige leeftijd het visuele meesterwerk King Kong (1933) had gezien, wist Ray Harryhausen welke richting hij uit wou met zijn leven. Enkele jaren later legde hij zich dan ook volledig toe op speciale filmeffecten. Hij toonde zich al gauw als een grootmeester in stop motion-animatie, de techniek waarbij per frame het voorwerp een beetje wordt verplaatst zodat de illusie van beweging wordt opgewekt als men de verschillende frames snel achter elkaar afspeelt. Maar hij verwierf vooral faam door zijn 'Dynamation'-techniek die stop motion combineert met live actie door het gebruik van split screen - meerdere beelden tegelijk op het scherm - en speciale projectiemethoden. Enkele mooie staaltjes van deze 'Dynamic Animation" zijn te vinden in deze unieke filmbox. Gedurende maar liefst dertig jaar behoorde hij tot de crème de la crème van de special F/X-vaklui. Als een waar vakman zocht hij steeds naar spectaculairdere visuele stunts en besteedde hij geduldig zijn tijd aan de uitvoering ervan. In 1992 viel de legendarische Harryhausen eindelijk in de prijzen bij de Academy Awards en sleepte hij de Gordon E. Sawyer-Award in de wacht voor Technical Achievement.

The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad (Juran, 1958) vertelt het verhaal van de stoere Sinbad die op een queeste vertrekt om de vloek ongedaan te maken die op zijn geliefde rust. Maar op weg naar de duivelse tovenaar Thatcher moet hij tal van mythische monsters overwinnen. De prent met Kerwin Mathews in de hoofdrol werd een echte kaskraker, niet in het minste dankzij de spectaculaire visuele effecten van Harryhausen.

Jason And The Argonauts (Chaffey, 1963) is dan weer de film die Harryhausen zelf als zijn beste prent beschouwt. In deze avonturenfilm gaat Jason (Todd Armstrong) op zoek naar het gulden vlies om zo zijn koninkrijk terug op te kunnen eisen. Maar tijdens deze zoektocht kruisen heel wat hindernissen zijn pad. Dat geduld een deugd van Harryhausen is, bewijst de fantastische scène waarin Jason en zijn kompanen de strijd aanbinden met zeven skeletten. Het fragment van enkele minuten heeft maar liefst 4 maanden van Harryhausens tijd in beslag genomen.

Met The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad (Hessler, 1974) kwam er een vervolg op de avonturen van Sinbad in de bioscoopzalen, ditmaal met John Philip Law in de hoofdrol. In deze prent vindt Sinbad een intrigerende kaart en trekt hij weer op avontuur. De boosaardige tovenaar Koura wil Sinbads plannen echter dwarsbomen... Ook hier komen de vaardigheden van Harryhausen weer aan te pas: een tot leven gewekt boegbeeld en gevechten met een zesarmig standbeeld en een eenogige centaur, spanning verzekerd!

Sinbad And The Eye Of The Tiger (Wanamaker, 1977), waarin Patrick Wayne de rol van Sinbad vertolkt, vervolledigt de Sinbad-trilogie. Nogmaals slaagt Harryhausen erin om verbluffende special effects te creëren en kijkers aan het scherm te kluisteren.

Naast deze vier avontuurlijke filmklassiekers bevat de nieuwste Ray Harryhausen Box ook The Early Years Collection: 2 discs boordevol interviews, features en fragmenten uit zijn eerdere werk! De eerste disc bevat de allereerste filmpjes en uitprobeersels van Harryhausen waarvan velen nooit eerder werden vertoond aan het grote publiek. Met deze disc kan je ook genieten van de opgepoetste Mother Goose Stories en de making of van The Tortoise And The Hare. De tweede disc is een unieke verzameling van nog nooit eerder vertoonde documentaires. Ja, het zijn zijn reguliere Nederlandse uitgaves van Columbia. Ze zijn kortgeleden al zeker twee keer in de aanbieding geweest bij Ro-Disc voor EUR 5 per stuk. Momenteel hebben ze alleen Jason en One Million Years BC te koop voor die prijs. Maar toch, dat zijn mooie prijsjes!

Ik heb zelf de R1 uitgaven. En ook die heb ik erg goedkoop kunnen kopen omdat de die-hard Harryhausenfans zo nodig over moesten stappen op de thematische box sets en hun losse dvd´s voor een prikkie van de hand deden op eBay. Dat zie je wel vaker bij films waar een (zogenaamde) ´upgrade´ van verschijnt. Deze Harryhausen boxsets bevatten overigens exact dezelfde dvd´s die los zijn uitgebracht, maar dan zonder de slipcase.

Ben wel blij dat ik ze heb, en t'is dat wat telt hé :wink:

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of 20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary Edition on 31st July 2007 priced at $24.95 SRP. Sony marks the half-century milestone of one of the earliest films by stop-motion animation genius Ray Harryhausen with this 50th Anniversary Edition of 20 Million Miles to Earth. The film, which depicts the destruction of Rome by a reptile from the planet Venus, was directed by Nathan Juran (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, First Men ‘in’ the Moon) and stars William Hopper (The Bad Seed) and Joan Taylor (Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers). In addition to the pristine, digitally-restored black & white original, the classic film will now be available in a newly colourized version supervised by Harryhausen himself.

In a recent interview, Harryhausen said “I am thrilled that this film is finally being seen in colour. I had wanted to do the film in colour in the 1950s, but our budget was not large enough to accommodate that luxury. Now, thanks to the marvellous advances made in the colourization process by San Diego’s Legend Films and others, audiences will be able to see 20 Million Miles to Earth as I originally intended.”

The two-disc set also features extensive bonus features including commentary by Harryhausen and multiple featurettes.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Ray Harryhausen In Color Gift Set on 4th December 2007 priced at $59.95 SRP. Three of the earliest film classics from stop-motion animation genius Ray Harryhausen will be available for the first time in vibrant colour with this gift set from Sony. Fortunately each film in the set is also present in pristine, digitally restored black & white original versions along with the newly colourised presentations.

Inside the set are two-disc special editions of -- It Came From Beneath the Sea, Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (each making their two-disc DVD debuts), and 20 Million Miles to Earth: 50th Anniversary Edition. Also included in the gift set is a collectible Ymir figurine based on Ray Harryhausen’s original 1957 hand-crafted design.

With the cutting-edge high-definition colorization technology, developed and patented by industry leaders Legend Films, Harryhausen has been able to visually recreate his films. Harryhausen said, “I am thrilled these films are finally being seen in color. I had wanted to do them in color in the 1950s, but the budgets were not large enough to accommodate that luxury. Toch nog maar even extra de aandacht er op vestingen: The Ray Harryhausen Collection begint nu echt leuk in prijs te dalen. Ik kocht hem zelf voor € 22,50 bij FRS (25 euro - 2,50 korting wegens beschadiging) en dat is een echt koopje.

Een aantal andere Harryhausen-films zijn ook voor leuke prijzen te krijgen. Ik heb recent First Men in the Moon en The 3 Worlds of Gulliver voor iets van 5 of 6 euro gekocht bij FRS en Van Leest. Momenteel kun je redelijk goedkoop een Harryhausen-collectie beginnen of aanvullen.

Toch nog maar even extra de aandacht er op vestingen: The Ray Harryhausen Collection begint nu echt leuk in prijs te dalen. Ik kocht hem zelf voor € 22,50 bij FRS (25 euro - 2,50 korting wegens beschadiging) en dat is een echt koopje.

Wil ik al een tijdje graag hebben! Voor die prijs neem ik hem meteen mee....echter laatst was hij nog 59,99 bij de FRS....:roll:

Op de website staat ie ook nog voor iets van 40 euro. Maar ik was dus erg blij om hem in de winkel voor een veel lagere prijs tegen te komen.

Hmm, figurine is best wel leuk, maar als je de R2UK al hebt, is dat dus niet echt een meerwaarde. Net voor het eerst wat van gekeken gisteren trouwens, het is echt een prachtige set.

Deze staat ook al een tijdje op m'n verlanglijstje, gauw maar eens aanschaffen. Alleen deze cover vind ik niet bepaald mooi. Waarschijnlijk slechts een kartonnen omhulsel van drie losse dvd's met aparte covers?

Ik vind de cover net erg mooi. Het zijn inderdaad drie keepcases in een doosje (dit kan niet tellen als slipcase, het is een echt doosje). Ik ben er erg tevreden over, dat moet gezegd.

Ik vind die Ray Harryhausen box niet met nedertalige ondertiteling...ik zou hem zo graag hebben..

It came from beneath the sea (1955)

De eerste film uit de Ray Harryhausenbox is niet echt een succes. De stop motion octopus is leuk om naar te kijken en ook meteen het hoogtepunt van de film. Daartussen veel geouwehoer en een slap liefdesverhaaltje. Beetje saai eigenlijk. Disk 2 van deze dvd bevat vele extra's, daar zal ik nog even doorheen lopen, die lijken me erg leuk. Wat ook erg leuk is...met een druk op de knop kun je switchen tussen origineel zwartwit en de gekleurde versie. Zwartwit heeft duidelijk mijn voorkeur. Hopelijk zijn Earth vs the flying saucers en 20 million miles to earth een stuk leuker.

It Came From Beneath the Sea is inderdaad één van de minste - te weinig Harryhausen, teveel gelul. 20 Million Miles to Earth daarentegen vind ik één van z'n beste.
