"Cars 2" in 2009
JVPixarNews reports that according to a reliable source, "Cars 2" is currently in the works with a target release date of 2009. Pixar is known for avoiding sequels, and even with all the successful films made by the studio, there has only been one sequel, "Toy Story 2." The news of another "Cars" movie is not confirmed, but according to Al Lutz at Miceage and Paul Newman, a "Cars" short will be released during the summer of 2008 (possibly with "Wall-E"), and then the sequel in 2009. Obviously, if there is another movie, it would have to be without Newman, who has since retired. "Cars" was released last year and went on to earn $460 million in worldwide ticket sales, on a $120 million budget. While, these are great results to make a sequel, it is Pixar's policy of avoiding lame follow-ups that still has me believe we will never see "Cars 2."
