August 14, 2007 - After weeks of online rumors, it has been confirmed that Len Wiseman is being lined up to direct New Line's remake of the John Carpenter cult classic Escape From New York. Gerard Butler is attached to star as Snake Plissken, the role originally played by Kurt Russell.

The Hollywood Reporter says Wiseman, who directed this summer's Live Free or Die Hard, is in negotiations to helm the remake, which "will combine an origin story for Plissken merged with the story of the 1981 movie."

The new version was scripted by Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down). Neal Moritz is producing via his Original Film company.

Len Wiseman also directed the two Underworld movies.

"call me Snake"... is het

October 29, 2007 - Although he's only been linked with the project (http://movies.ign.com/articles/825/825035p1.html) for a few weeks, filmmaker Brett Ratner has reportedly passed on directing New Line's remake of Escape From New York.

A scooper for Ain't It Cool News claims to have chatted with Ratner at this past weekend's Savannah Film Festival (http://www.scad.edu/filmfest/?gclid=CMO90rjHtI8CFQGnPAodO31qRQ), where Ratner was a guest. Ratner advised them that Escape From New York was still happening, but not with him at the helm.

Ratner had stepped in for Len Wiseman (http://movies.ign.com/articles/812/812944p1.html), who was first attached to direct the re-imagining of John Carpenter's 1981 cult classic. Gerard Butler remains attached to star as Snake Plissken, a role originated by Kurt Russell.

Weer een update:

Variety is reporting that Butler has left the project due to 'creative differences.' I wonder what those differences could be? How about not wanting to remake a recent classic?</IMG> I really think that at this point, this remake needs to be squashed. This was a silly idea to begin with, and with Butler leaving, is there anyone else you can see playing Snake Pliskken? Maybe Jonah Hill, but I don't know, even that's stretching it. As of now, New Line has Johnathan Mostow (TERMINATOR 3) in to write, with the option to direct, But I really don't see this project moving forward with its big star attached. We'll see.

Snake Plissken? I heard you were dead.
But it seems that the remake of John Carpenter's sci-fi classic ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK still has some life in it. Originally, Gerard Butler was going to wear the patch as the notorious monocular antihero, with Len Wiseman and Brett Ratner each briefly sitting in the directors chair, but the project ultimately crashed like Donald Pleasance's aircraft.
Now Vulture (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/02/vulture_exclusive_the_escape_f.html) says that New Line is pushing the project into future Manhattan again, with a rewrite by WALL STREET 2 scribe Allan Loeb (the previous draft from BLACK HAWK DOWN writer Ken Nolan has obviously been discarded). According to them, "Loeb nailed the humor in Plissken without slipping into camp, and he changed Snake’s rescue-mission target from a president to a female senator, thereby upping the banter quotient."
Vulture also claims that as an apparent cost-cutting measure, the new New York will be a mostly recognizable I AM LEGEND alteration of the Big Apple, which "was evacuated and turned into a privately run penal colony after the detonation of a crude radioactive dirty bomb on the outskirts of the city."
Supposedly, John Carpenter had a few stipulations (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/02/vulture_exclusive_the_escape_f.html) about the project before he would hand over the rights, which is different from his usual mercenary involvement (by his own admission): "to extend my hand and have a check placed in it."
No director or actor is attached to the redo yet, but it's likely original star Kurt Russell won't approve. When he learned about the remake a couple of years ago, Russell had this to say: ""F*ck that! I am Snake Plissken! It's like Sean Connery always watching someone else do their version of Bond. I think one of the things, for instance, about Escape From New York that appealed to me was that it wasn't a special effects extravaganza. It's a quiet, dark world and it revolved around watching the behavior of this one guy. He's a fascinating character. In fact, he's the most complex character I've ever played."

On Wednesday, we learned (http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=30799) that the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake was still happening.
Since there aren't too many details on the project, MTV wanted to get ahold of Allan Loeb, who is penning the script for the reboot.
To start with, Loeb said this in reference to the scale of the remake in comparison to the original, "I see it as a big movie. I see it as possibly, hopefully the beginning of a franchise." Obviously, this isn't the first go around with trying to continue the storyof Snake Plissken, "I know [New Line] tried with 'Escape from L.A.' a few years back and it didn't work out but [it's] try, try again [in] Hollywood. I definitely think of it as a big movie. I think New Line agrees [on] the possibility of a franchise, and bringing back Snake Plissken is very exciting."
John Carpenter did have a few stipulations when it came handing over the rights, especially with Snake's character. He must wear an eye patch and be badass, amongst other things. But what did Loeb say about his involvement? "I don't know how much John Carpenter is involved. I don't think he's involved extensively. I know I did my work without his tutelage." However the writer is game for bringing back the original Snake himself, Kurt Russell, "The only reason I would think [he wouldn't be involved] is if Kurt didn't want to do it. I'd be the first to jump on my computer and find the cameo for you. If [New Line] asked me to, it would be a lot of fun."
The remake is all about bringing the awesomeness to the new generation, "Bringing back Snake Plissken is very exciting. As well as the [underlying story and the title 'Escape from New York'... we believe that there's a chance to re-tell that idea. [But set] in this day and age, and still have it be very exciting and interesting. Put four walls around the island of Manhattan, drop in the world's most dangerous criminals and what's the ecosystem that arises?"[/color]
What do you guys think about all this? I noticed that some of you were saying, no Kurt, no remake. So, can no one else take over this iconic role? Yay or nay? Give us your thoughts!

Deel 1 en 2 vond ik zeer vermakelijk In principe hoeft een remake niet van mij, maar sta er wel voor open..alleen ben ik nog niet zeker van de acteur keuze

Escape From New York Remake Dumped

It must be the week for studios hitting the brakes on certain projects… Mere days after Universal decided it didn’t want to risk Ron Howard’s ambitious adaptation (http://www.empireonline.com/News/story.asp?nid=31502) of The Dark Tower series, New Line and Warner Bros. have opted not to move forward on the planned remake/reboot of Escape from New York. (http://www.deadline.com/2011/07/new-line-dropping-escape-from-new-york/)
This is one that has been bubbling away in the development soup for years now, with the likes of Brett Ratner, Len Wiseman, Breck Eisner and Jonathan Mostow all having flirted with the idea of directing the film and Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner and Josh Brolin under consideration to inherit Kurt Russell’s eye patch and scowl as iconic hard nut Snake Plissken. Oh, and it might not come as a surprise to anyone that Warners in particular had recently been trying to convince Tom Hardy that what he really wanted to do was take on Snake, but we doubt he was truly interested. Poisoned chalice, much?
Now, however, it would seem the movie gods have decided that the original Escape has suffered enough indignation simply by having Escape from LA in existence. But don’t go popping the champagne corks just yet – the studio has simply let the remake rights to John Carpenter’s 1981 original lapse, so someone could sweep in and pick them up…
