Mark Millar Says Kick-Ass 3 Will Be Last Movie In The Series – But What Do Universal Say?

I think it’s a fair comment that, depending on the performance of Kick-Ass 2, we might not get to a third instalment. Is it also fair to think that, should Kick-Ass 2 and subsequently a third film become huge smashes, then a fourth chapter will be all but inevitable?
Millar was speaking to SFX (http://www.sfx.co.uk/2013/02/01/mark-millar-on-x-men-days-of-future-past-sentinels-and-kitty-pryde-fans-wont-be-disappointed/2/), still (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/02/01/mark-millar-promises-days-of-future-past-sentinels-teases-kitty-pryde-surprise/), when he said:

Kick-Ass 3 is going to be the last one though. I told Universal this and they asked me, ‘What does that mean?’ I said, ‘It means that this is where it all ends.’ They said, ‘Do they all die at the end?’ I said, ‘Maybe’ – because this is a realistic superhero story. And if someone doesn’t have a bullet proof vest like Superman and doesn’t have Batman’s millions then eventually he is going turn around the wrong corner and get his head kicked in or get shot in the face.
“Superman has a bullet proof vest?”, etc.
Millar’s obviously got a big finish in mind. I expect something along the lines of The Dark Knight Returns, though maybe Dave will get beaten to a pulp.
I wonder if Millar means something moral when he says “needs” here:

So Kick-Ass needs to reflect that. There has to be something dramatic at the end, he cannot do this for the rest of his life.
I think he just means narratively. We’ll see.
If Kick-Ass 2 is a smash then Kick-Ass 3 hits big too, leaving Universal gagging for more, there might be another avenue: a Justice Forever spin-off. Something is in the works (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/01/30/will-kick-ass-3-be-called-justice-forever-or-is-this-something-else/), clearly.
