Ik zie zojuist op Play.com dan de klassieker Citizen Kane uit 1941 als Special Edition binnenkort (begin juni) wordt uitgebracht in regio 2.

Weet iemand wanneer deze in Nederland wordt uitgebracht (Ned Ond)?

De rechten van Citizen Kane liggen niet wereldwijd bij dezelfde maatschappij. Zo is de R1 uitgebracht door Warner, en de aankomende R2 wordt uitgebracht door Universal.

Ik weet niet wie de rechten in Nederland bezit, maar als bijvoorbeeld Warner die bezit, geeft deze R2/UK release weinig hoop voor een NL-ondertitelde uitgave.....

Universal Pictures Video has let us in on the official special features for its upcoming special edition of Citizen Kane. Orson Welles's celebrated masterpiece returns on 23 June, priced £19.99.

The DVD has been mastered from a newly-discovered 35mm fine grain interpositive. The film and soundtrack have been individually cleaned, allowing for the utmost clarity of picture and sound without compromising the film’s original depth and texture. Included will be a side-by-side comparison of the interpositive before and after remastering.

This two disc set contains these special features: 'Anatomy Of A Classic,' a new custom-made 50 minute documentary presented by Barry Norman, Welles’ original 1938 radio broadcast of The War Of The Worlds, a behind the scenes stills gallery, cast and crew profiles, Welles’ 1945 commercial recording of Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince with Bing Crosby and supporting cast and music by Bernard Herrmann.

There will be an audio commentary by film historian Ken Barnes, the original film budget and a collectible booklet featuring an essay on Welles and Kane.

Van deze versie (regio 1) weet ik dat hij prachtig is opgeschoond qua beeld en geluid. Of de regio 2 SE dit ook is, is maar de vraag (andere maatschappij, zie post Mark_vdH )

de regio 1 heeft toch wel het grote voordeel dat Bogdanovich er aan heeft meegewerkt. Is een groot Welles en film kenner en weet boeiend te vertellen.

Ik weet niet of dat vaak een probleem is dat UK versies van Warner geen Nederlandse ondertitels hebben. Ik weet dat de UK versie van Adam's Rib wel Nederlandse subs heeft, dus je weet maar nooit.

Ik neem aan dat Dolby Digital 1.0 gewoon over de twee frontspeakers verspreid wordt?

Hoewel de R1 inderdaad spectaculair opgeschoond is, heeft deze versie toch ook de nodige kritiek gekregen.

De film is namelijk zo "sterk" digitaal bijgewerkt, dat ook de filmgrain en wat details zijn "weggerestaureerd". Robert Harris (restaurateur van o.a. Spartacus en Lawrance Of Arabia) stelt:

I've said in the past that grain is our friend. It is the basic structure of the filmed image. It just needs to be represented and reproduced properly. And as I'll go into a bit later, that grain is what helps to identify films as film. Some of the more recent transfers of some very high profile films, such as Snow White*, Citizen Kane and North by Northwest*, have been digitally cleaned to a point where the film grain has been removed, yielding an almost shiny, grainless image. I'm not saying that these transfers are bad. They're not. It's just that they're different, and not representative of the actual film. They are, for all intents and purposes, a modification of the film into a fully digital, video product

However, note the rain coming down on the window in Bernstein's office in chapter ten of this DVD. In the original version of the film, the rain is clearly visible all the way down the window. On the DVD, the rain is only visible in the top 1/3 of the window and looks rather unnatural at that. My guess is that LDI's automated cleaning program mistook the rainfall for grain or some other form of "noise" and "cleaned" it up.

Ik heb de dvd bij die scene trouwens even vergeleken met m'n VHS-je, maar ik vond het verschil eerlijk gezegd nogal meevallen. Wel is het inderdaad zo dat de transfer een beetje video-achtig overkomt, maar dan wel van uitstekende kwaliteit... :wink:

ANATOMY OF A CLASSIC

Especially created for this DVD release, Anatomy Of A Classic is a brand new 50 minute featurette presented by Barry Norman. The programme delves deep into the making of Citizen Kane, examining individual elements of this ground breaking production including script, art direction, cinematography, special effects, make up and editing. It features footage and information never before seen on DVD.

WELLES CAUSES NATIONAL PANIC WITH RADIO BROADCAST

Included on Disc Two of this Special Edition of Citizen Kane is Welles' notorious radio presentation of The War of the Worlds. In his adaptation of the play, Welles made an important change: under his direction the play was written and performed so it would sound like an on the spot news report about an invasion from Mars.

As the audience heard this simulation of a news broadcast, created with voice acting and sound effects, hundreds of thousands of listeners concluded that they were hearing an actual news account of an invasion from Mars. People packed the roads, hid in cellars, loaded guns, even wrapped their heads in wet towels as protection from Martian poison gas, in an attempt to defend themselves against aliens, oblivious to the fact that they were acting out the role of the panic-stricken public that actually belonged in a radio play.

The broadcast did contain a number of explanations that it was all a radio play, but if members of the audience missed a brief explanation at the beginning, the next one didn't arrive until ten minutes into the programme.

CITIZEN KANE - A BLUFFER'S GUIDE

Facts to transform you from film buffoon to film buff

Cheese cloth was run across the film to make the newly-shot newsreel of Kane's life look more like archive footage.

According to an essay written by Gore Vidal (a close friend of William Randolph Hearst's) "Rosebud" was Hearst's name for a very private part of long-time mistress Marion Davies' anatomy.

Welles' film was the recipient of nine Oscar nominations with only one win - Best Original Screenplay (Mankiewicz and Welles).

In the 'News On The March' newsreel sequence, the shots over which Coleridge's poem 'Xanadu' is imposed are actually of San Simeon, Hearst's own extravagant ranch.

Welles and cinematographer, Gregg Toland, were pioneers of deep focus, a technique which allows everything from the front to the back of the frame to be in focus at the same time.

There are no crowd scenes in Citizen Kane. When he addresses a gigantic indoor rally, only Kane and the other actors on the stage are real. The audience is a miniature, with flickering lights to suggest movement.

KANE'S CONNECTION TO HEARST A 'LUCE' ONE

Although Citizen Kane was widely seen as an attack on newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst, it was also aimed at Henry R. Luce and his concept of faceless group journalism, as then practiced at his Time magazine and March of Time newsreels. The opening "News on the March" segment is a deliberate

parody of the Luce newsreel, and the reason you rarely see the faces of any of the journalists is that Welles and Mankiewicz were kidding the anonymity of Luce's writers and editors.

Wow! Dat van die radio-opname van War of the Worlds vind ik wel heel gaaf: ik wist eigenlijk niet dat die bewaard was gebleven. Da's iets waarvoor ik mijn policy van 'niet vervangen' (ik heb de oude Universal-uitgave nog) nog wel eens opzij wil schuiven.

Ik heb de R1 SE al iets van 1,5 jaar en ik heb daarover niets te klagen. Ik verbaas me echter wel over het feit dat Warner zijn herstelde versie heeft vrijgegeven.

Het grote nadeel van de r2 is dat inderdaad Bogdanovic er niet aan meewerkte, als er iemand is die veel over de film weet naast Orson zelf dan is hij het wel. En daarnaast mist deze de bijna 2 uur durende documantaire "The Battle Over Citizen Kane" dat is echt een must, dan kan ik je verzekeren.

Het helpt zeker als je weet waarom je deze film moet gaan kijken, hoeveel waardering Welles voor deze film krijgt vandaag de dag. The AFCA hebben deze film al jaren op 1 staan als beste film ooit. En op IMDB scoort hij ook in de top tien. Maar vooral om je te realiseren hoe deze film is gemaakt, en wat Welles ervoor heeft moeten doen om deze film op de plank te krijgen, en met Touch Of Evil nog een keer.

Kortom deze man was zijn tijd zover vooruit dat men het toen nog niet leek aan te durven om zo'n film uit te brengen. De angles zijn super en echt vanuit alle hoeken. Erg veel als met Panic Room, maar dan veel beter en deze film is wel 61 jaar eerder gemaakt.

Graag hou ik me op de hoogte hoe het staat met de regio2... Ik hoop echt dat het beeld mooi is. Als je bijvoorbeeld de S.E. van Metropolis in regio 2 ziet dat is het beeld schitterend. Dus laten we maar duimen.

Wat vaag. De transfer van de Regio 2 versie is dus anders als die van de Regio 1 versie? Is ook bekend welke van de twee de betere is en of er verschillen zijn in het materiaal dat te zien is?

Ik ben *verzot* op filmrestauraties dus ik zie mezelf nu al beide versies aanschaffen. Lijkt me errrug cool, alleen heb ik dan 3 versies van dezelfde film.

Maar in dit geval is het misschien wat lastiger. Liggen de rechten in Nederland ook bij Universal? Want als de rechten bij bijvoorbeeld Warner (die ook de rechten in R1 hebben) liggen, moet je wellicht toch nog even wachten....

Klinkt geweldig! Ik ga voor de UK-editie! Geinig dat we JUIST met deze film dan toch nog de superieure release krijgen. Hulde aan BFI die trouwens wel meer mooie filmrestauraties op zijn naam heeft staan.

Btw: dat BBFC-certificaat heb je ook bij de Criterion-editie van The Third Man. Een erg leuk detail.

In deze recentie wordt de transfer van de R1-editie eigenlijk al lichtelijk bekritiseerd:

Those who have seen grainy VHS copies or very old TV prints of Citizen Kane will delight at the truly amazing job Warner Brothers have done with the visual transfer. Presented in its original 4:3 ratio, the transfer feels like it has been created entirely using digital CGI effects - black and white colour tones are fresh, and dazzle when viewed, and the relative lack of speckles, shimmers or unnecessary grain ensures the film has clearly been given a whole new lease of life. Unfortunately, it is rumoured that Warner's mastering has removed some traces of tiny images on the print (i.e. water droplets and snow flakes are much harder to spot, and appear to have been completely removed in some accidental instances) but you'd be hard pressed to ever notice this. You might notice the occasional edge enhancement as well, and this prevents the film from earning top marks, even if Warner deserve a ten-out-of-ten for effort.

Zoals iemand al eerder opnoemde heeft Warner kennelijk iets teveel met digitale tools gewerkt waarbij er dus detail verloren is gegaan. BFI zal vermoedelijk de wat traditionelere methoden gebruikt hebben. Coole organisatie: ik heb wel eens rondgelopen in het bfi National Film Theatre in London (helaas heb ik er geen film gezien). Een beetje vergelijkbaar met het Nederlandse filmmuseum.
