Standaard The Power of the Dark Crystal (The Dark Crystal 2)

Brian Henson werkt aan een vervolg op The Dark Crystal:

    Henson planning Dark Crystal sequel

"The Power of the Dark Crystal" features Jen and Kira as king and queen fighting to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again split.

Varity reported that The Jim Henson Company is planning on making a sequel to the 1982 fantasy classic "The Dark Crystal".

The film, which is titled "The Power of the Dark Crystal", has been written by David Odell (The Dark Crystal, The Muppet Show) and Annette Duffy. No director is yet attached to the film which will start shooting this fall and is planned for a 2007 release. The film will combine live-action animatronic characters with CG animation. Like its predecessor, the film hopes to push the boundaries of puppetry, special effects, and visual story-telling.

The story for the film is set many years after the original movie. The first film's original heroes Jen and Kira are now king and queen, and must fight to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again split.

Any further cast and crew announcements have not been made. But it has been cited that The Jim Henson Company wants to involve many of the people who worked on the original movie (such as Brian Froud and Frank Oz). The official word on the cast & crew should be made later this year once production picks up on the project.

The Jim Henson Company had tossed around ideas of a sequel (or prequel) over the years. In the late '90s there was strong support from many Henson executives, led by Brian Henson, to make a prequel to the 1982 film. Sadly the plans never materialized; but now that the company is "Muppet-free" they want to work to bring back many of their existing productions and franchises.

The film has built a strong cult-following since 1982 and mixed with the new surge in "fantasy world" films in the recent years, Henson feels that now is the perfect time to bring back the world of the Dark Crystal.

The company is also working on developing animated series, interactive games and other related media as well.

    Stephen Garlick - Jen
    Lisa Maxwell - Kira
    Billie Whitelaw - Aughra
    Barry Dennen - Chamberlain
    Michael Kilgarriff - General
    Jerry Nelson - High Priest

Dark Crystal sequel now headed to DVD
The film has been in development since 2005 with a scheduled DVD release in the next 12-18 months
    By Phillip Chapman, Muppet Central
    January 7, 2008

For the past year, news has been fairly quiet on Henson's development of the planned sequel to the beloved 1982 film, "The Dark Crystal". The Latino Review posted the following update about the forthcoming Dark Crystal sequel on it's web site.
...fans of the original Dark Crystal will be excited to know about a sequel also being released this year on DVD:
Set on the mythical planet Thra, the follow-up takes place years after the ending of the original and begins with Jen and Kira welcoming to their castle a guest from the center of the planet, Thurma the fire girl, who, in a desperate attempt to save her people, re-shatters the Crystal.
“The first few times it came up we thought it would be impossible because the first movie was such a huge production in its day. How could we even do something like that because it was such a huge undertaking the first time around?” admits [Lisa] Henson. “But then we started talking about a very interesting hybrid of puppets and CGI, and we realized it was doable and we got very excited about it.”
What is most interesting about this report is the confirmation that "The Power of The Dark Crystal" will not be a theatrical release as many hoped and was initially announced. Instead, "The Power of The Dark Crystal" will be released immediately to DVD in late 2008 or early 2009.
Fans have hoped that "The Power of The Dark Crystal" and the announced Fraggle Rock movie would help to revolutionize the company that Jim Henson founded, however, questions now arise over how much success a made-for-DVD sequel can have. This news may also increase the possibility that the Fraggle Rock movie will become a direct-to-DVD release as well.
In May 2006, Brian Henson confirmed that “We are trying to pull the business pieces together on a Dark Crystal sequel. That one’s pretty far along. It’s got a good, strong script, a great vision for how to do it and we’re just trying to [put it together].”
Award-winning animation director Genndy Tartakovsky, who created the hit series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory was announced as the director of "The Power of The Dark Crystal" in February 2006.
Variety originally reported that a sequel was in development in May 2005.

Lisa Henson spoke of the production in a December 2010 interview, stating:
It's in pre-production, and rather a slow pre-production at that. We have been partners with a company called Omni Lab based in Sydney, Australia. They're a very up-and-coming company and they’re very ambitious for Dark Crystal. In partnership with them, we’ve made the movie into a much bigger film so it's taking its time to get going... Were planning on using puppetry as well as CGI and even the puppets will be augmented with CGI. But we would like to have a pretty strong component of puppetry because of that tactile quality that the original puppets have. It would be a lot simpler to make a CGI movie but we’d like to hang on to some of the puppetry.[12]

Al een tijdje bekend, maar nog niet gepost:

Fans of ‘80s cult film “The Dark Crystal” may hang their heads in sorrow today, as it looks as if the decades long development hell for The Jim Henson Company’s sequel to the 1982 fantasy epic helmed by Henson and Frank Oz has taken a bad turn once again.
For awhile there things where looking mostly positive, as back in May 2010 it was reported that “Daybreakers” co-directors Peter and Michael Spierig where starting pre-production on the sequel entitled “The Power of the Dark Crystal,” and would be utilizing CGI and the 3D format. While the choice of the Spierigs was an awful one, especially over the much more capable animation director and fan supported Genndy Tartakovsky, many folks just seemed happy they’d finally get to see the Gelfings embarking on another adventure.
Well now production house Omnilab Media is said to be parting ways with The Jim Henson Company on the project, after managing director Christoper Mapp told Australian periodical IF Magazine late last year that the project would “sit for a period of time and we’d talk again sometime in 2012.” Looks like those talks didn’t go so well, as Omnilab appears to be cutting financing to the project, perhaps after the financial failure of their recent Clive Owen, Robert De Niro action vehicle “The Killer Elite.” Maybe they’re looking to cut spending on projects with a considerable budget, and this certainly appeared to be one that wouldn't be cheap.
The Spierig Brothers have also moved onto another project by the name of “Jungle,” which is based on the true story of young Australian Yossi Ghinsberg’s survival amidst the Amazon jungle. Truthfully, “The Dark Crystal” still holds up well as a fantasy epic, but there’s no telling what the guys who made the overly complicated and brutally dull “Daybreakers” would have done with this tale. This could be for the better, so maybe fans should just return to their special edition copies of “The Dark Crystal” on DVD for now.

The 10-episode fantasy adventure series takes place many years before the events of the film. The series will be shot in the UK and will star an ensemble of fantastical, state-of-the-art creatures created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and Brian Froud, the original feature’s conceptual designer.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will be a Netflix original series produced by The Jim Henson Company and executive produced by Letterier, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. Longtime Henson collaborator Rita Peruggi will serve as producer and Henson’s Blanca Lista will serve as a co-executive producer. Leading the writing are co-executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (Life in a Year), and Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost, The 100).

“Louis Leterrier is passionate about the world of The Dark Crystal and has an incredible creative vision for the series. He brings this passion to every facet of the production as he leads the talented team of artists and writers that are bringing this entire universe to life,” said Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company. “Netflix has a deep respect for my father’s original work and the many people it inspired. They are the perfect partners to create this next epic chapter in The Dark Crystal story for new fans and the loyal fans who have waited so long for more adventures from this world.”
