Even een vraagje tussendoor.

King Kong in top form on DVD
By David Colton, USA TODAY
"We're millionaires, boys. I'll share it with all of you!"
The makers of the DVD of 1933's King Kong went all out in restoring the cinematic classic.
Warner Home Video
That's what showman Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) exclaims after he fells King Kong with gas bombs and prepares to bring the lovestruck ape to New York. (Related item: Kong out on DVD today)
And that's how fans of 1933's King Kong will react as they find unexpected bits of cinema treasure in the DVD, out today, of the 72-year-old classic, which many believe is the greatest adventure movie ever made. The DVD is so full of extras and commentaries that they rival the movie's long-awaited digital restoration.
The importance of Kong in movie history cannot be overestimated. The brainchild of maverick filmmakers Merian C. Cooper and Ernest Schoedsack, it was as crucial to Hollywood's survival in the 1930s as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were to summer blockbusters in the 1970s.
The 104-minute monster chase — built around an 18-inch puppet that was animated frame by frame, and a wide-eyed, 26-year-old Fay Wray as Kong's love — saved its studio, RKO, broke box-office records at the height of the Depression and launched a new era of sound, music and effects.
What's on the 'King Kong' DVDs
King Kong Special Edition (2 discs, Warner, $27) movie; documentary on director; effects wiz Ray Harryhausen commentary; making of King Kong.
King Kong Collector's Edition tin (2 discs, Warner, $40), movie and documentaries, plus paper souvenirs.
The King Kong Collection (4 discs, Warner, $40) collector's edition, plus movies Mighty Joe Young and Son of Kong.
Kong imagery is ageless:
• The stop-motion animation of Willis O'Brien, who endowed Kong with savagery and pathos, one movement at a time.
• The impossible danger seemingly faced by Wray, who kicked her feet deliciously while held high over Manhattan. (She was so identified with her hairy co-star that she called her 1989 autobiography On the Other Hand.)
• The scary but politically incorrect natives, a caricature of the '30s redeemed by the proud bearing of the chief, played by Noble Johnson.
Among the two-disc DVD's treasures:
•The spider scene. Peter Jackson, director of the upcoming remake, had his crew re-create a long-lost spider sequence, which was removed by director Cooper in 1933 when it proved too horrifying. The six-minute extra will have fans buzzing for years.
•Details made visible. While the new print still shows occasional picture flutter, fanatics will find marvels: bubbling lava inside Skull Mountain; the sequins on Wray's gown; the police station clock as Kong climbs the Empire State Building. (It's almost 4 a.m.)
•Back in time. The movie can provide a history lesson for video-bred kids. A woman at a Depression-era soup kitchen mentions "soup tonight. Coffee and sinkers in the morning." Sinkers? Doughnuts.
Bringing this DVD back to civilization could be a risky marketing move for Jackson's glitzy remake, due in theaters Dec. 14. It's another reminder that the Old School ape will always stand as "the eighth wonder of the world."
