Er zit een release aan te komen (waarschijnlijk met kerst ) van het concert dat Queen gaf op 24-12-1975. Een van de beste concerten van ze, uit hun creatief beste periode. Zie ook http://www.brianmay.com/whatsnew.html. Alhoewel dit concert al zeer veel gebootlegged is, is het toch erg gaaf dat er nu een DVD van uit lijkt te gaan komen. De DVD's die Queen tot nu toe heeft uitgebracht (Wembley, Milton Keynes en Montreal) zijn allemaal erg goed naar mijn mening, dus dit zou wel is de jofelste Queen release tot nu toe kunnen zijn!!

Als ik even vlug door de berichten op die site blader, zie ik dat nog gevraagd wordt of iemand opnames heeft van de toegift. Het is dus nog in een redelijk prille fase. Daarentegen juich ik alleen al het initiatief toe. Tijd dat die periode ook eens aandacht krijgt. Wat mij betreft was Queen een superband op hun eerste zeven albums. Daarna kwam een inzinking en vervolgens de jaren '80 en '90 met albums die allemaal toch wat minder spannend zijn dan het eerdere werk. Ik heb een bootleg van dat bewuste concert in de Hammersmith Odeon en die bevalt uitstekend (zowel de setlist als de kwaliteit van het geluid). Prima als daar nu eens een officiële dvd van uitkomt. En daarna graag meteen door met meer concerten uit de jaren zeventig.

Dan twist ik bij deze; The Miracle, Innuendo en alle andere albums van na pakweg 1978 kunnen nog niet in de schaduw staan van die eerste albums. Queen na 1979 is in muzikaal opzicht een compleet andere band dan daarvoor. Het is mainstream popmuziek geworden. Daardoor zijn ze vanaf die tijd toegankelijker voor een veel groter publiek, maar de scherpte, uitzinnigheid, creativiteit en diversiteit van hun betere periode was praktisch weg. Vergelijk het suffige I Want To Break Free maar eens met het gitzwarte Death on Two Legs, of met het extravagante March of the Black Queen, of het epische The Prophet's Song. Een buitenstaander zou er niet op komen dat dit muziek van één en dezelfde band is. Dat geldt ook voor verreweg de meeste nummers op The Miracle en Innuendo. Het is popmuziek geworden. Met die specifieke vergelijking op zich is overigens niets gezegd over de kwaliteit van de muziek. Maar het moge duidelijk zijn dat het verschil in stijl tamelijk extreem is.

Daarbij zijn Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack en A Night at the Opera zeldzame albums bij wie de het geheel groter is dan som van de delen. De manier waarop die nummers soms in elkaar overvloeien en soms juist een contrast met elkaar vormen, maakt dat het luisteren van het album in z'n geheel een meerwaarde geeft aan die individuele nummers. Combinaties als Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke - Nevermore - March of the Black Queen, of Tenement Funster - Flick of the Wrist - Lily of the Valley, of Death on Two Legs - Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon - I'm in love with my Car.

Iemand die vooral fan is door nummers als Radio GaGa, I Want to Break Free en The Miracle is niet minder fan dan iemand die vooral fan is door die eerdere nummers. Maar ik heb het gevoel dat we dan wel fan zijn van andere bands. En als je fan bent van alle muzikale fases (inclusief het verschrikkelijke Hot Space), dan ben je wat mij betreft praktisch fan van twee verschillende bands. Drie als je de post-Mercury periode meetelt.

Wat mij betreft was Queen een superband op hun eerste zeven albums.

Ik vind The Game en Flash Gordon eigenlijk ook geweldig. The Game omdat ik het fantastisch vind dat een band die vier jaar eerder nog bombastische rock maakte, opeens zo'n totaal ander album kan maken met geweldige nummers als Crazy little thing called love, Another one bites the dust en dragon attack. Het album past precies in het beeld dat ik heb van Queen als ongelofelijk divers.

En Flash Gordon is als album misschien een vreemde eend in de bijt, maar als je bedenkt dat het natuurlijk eigenlijk bedoeld is als soundtrack voor die über-camp film Flash Gordon vind ik het een uitermate geslaagd album. Wederom een totaal ander album dan wat ze daarvoor maakte.

Helaas is The Game het eerste echte pop album van ze (Jazz vind ik te veel alle kanten op gaan om nog een pop album te noemen. Misschien wel het meest extravagante album dat ze ooit gemaakt hebben) en dat werd in de jaren 80 alleen maar erger. Innuendo is dan wel weer een heel stuk puurder, maar de overdaad aan keyboards op dit album maken het toch echt minder dan de jaren 70 albums. Naar mijn mening natuurlijk.

Wat betreft de jaren 70 DVD's. Hopelijk komen Houston '77 en Hammersmith '79 ooit ook nog is op DVD wat dat zijn wel zo'n beetje de ultieme Queen concerten.

Mijn Idool Freddie, alweer 19 jaar dood helaas



Echt niet te geloven dat het vandaag alweer 19 jaar geleden (24 November 1991) is dat hij ons is ontvallen.

Maar gelukkig hebben we zijn prachtige muziek als een mooie blijvende herinnering.

Voor mij toch met afstand de allergrootste rockfrontman allertijden.

Zijn muziek blijf ik draaien elke dag zowat.

Zo maar even een mooie cd opzetten van Freddie.

Leuk nieuwtje voor de Freddie Mercury fans :

Duetten Freddie Mercury & Michael Jackson binnenkort in de winkel

Michael Jackson heeft diverse duetten met onder andere Paul McCartney en Stevie Wonder op zijn naam staan. Nu blijkt dat hij in de vroege tachtiger jaren een aantal duetten met niemand minder dan Freddie Mercury (Queen) heeft opgenomen.

Deze duetten zijn tot nu toe nooit uitgebracht, maar binnenkort zullen de fans er van kunnen gaan genieten. Roger Taylor, Brian May en John Deacon zouden de demo's aan het perfectioneren zijn om ze uit te gaan laten brengen.

In een recentelijk interview voor een Belgisch blad laat drummer Roger Taylor weten dat ze deze plannen hebben. Hij wilde er verder nog niet te veel over loslaten maar vertelde wel dat ze echt fantastisch klinken. Het zou gaan om de nummers ‘Victoria’, ‘There Must Be More to Life Than This’ en ‘State Of Shock’.

Press Release: Live At Wembley Stadium DVD - 25th Anniversary Edition



RELEASED ON SEPTEMBER 5TH 2011

September 5th 2011 sees the DVD release of Queen Live at Wembley Stadium. A special 25th Anniversary edition DVD of Queens legendary 1986 concerts, the 2 disc set comes with previously unreleased footage and brand new bonus features.

Over one remarkable summer weekend, on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th July 1986, Queen performed two sell out shows at Wembley, concerts which have been widely acknowledged as two of the most incredible rock events ever staged.

Now, for the first time, both the Friday and Saturday night concerts can be seen in their entirety on the Anniversary edition DVD, highlighting that no two Queen shows were ever the same.

The driving rain of the Friday night show presented its own challenges but failed to dampen the mood or the music, presenting Freddie Mercury with some perfect opportunities to amuse the crowd.

The sun shone on Saturday, making it a magical summers evening, as the band showcased everything that made Queen brilliant live.

The DVD footage has been restored for the Anniversary edition and the sound has also been remastered with a brand new stereo mix and 5.1 sound.

Extras on the DVD include ‘The Magic Tour’, a short feature containing brand new interviews with Brian May and Roger Taylor filmed this year.

They reflect back on what was to be their final tour with their familiar intelligence, honesty and brilliant wit and humour. They explain in depth how they would approach planning their concerts and they also reflect on the poignancy of the shows which were to become among the last few performances with Freddie.

Queen Live at Wembley Stadium is released on September 5th coinciding with what would have been Freddie Mercury’s 65th birthday. The final five studio albums that Queen released are also re-issued on the same day.
“The Wembley concerts in 1986 were the pinnacle for us” says Brian May. “We were at our height band-wise, and Freddie had developed this phenomenal way of dealing with stadium audiences. Being back home in London playing two sell-out nights was such a big, big occasion for us. None of us realised that this would be almost the last time we played together…”

Queen’s 1986 Magic Tour had been their most successful to date. Regenerated and reinvigorated by their triumph at Live Aid almost exactly a year earlier, the band were on a 26-date tour of the UK and Europe and after a month out of the country returned home to London to play two defining concerts at the ‘place of champions’, Wembley Stadium.

These were to be Queen’s biggest stage, their biggest lighting rig, the biggest screen that not only Queen had performed with, but also that Wembley Stadium had ever seen. For director Gavin Taylor, filming it involved the unprecedented use of no less than 15 cameras and a helicopter to capture the aerial shots.

For Freddie it was the start of one very long party. Friends were flown in from New York and ferried from his London home to Wembley in special coaches. It was one of the proudest days of his life.

The Saturday show saw a previous wet day turn into one of the sunniest of the year. “It was a perfect day,” says director Taylor. And the Wembley roar went up as Brian, Roger, John and Freddie arrived on stage to the synthesised opening chords on One Vision.

For the next 110 minutes Queen played what was undoubtedly one of their most potent concert performances. The two Wembley concerts, along with a hastily added final date at Stevenage’s Knebworth Park a month later, were among Queen's finest moments.

“Wembley Stadium was such a special place,” says Roger. “Having played it as part of Live Aid and to come back and play it again was such a blast.”

It’s perhaps no surprise that Queen’s hit musical, We Will Rock You, sees the show’s heroes end up at Wembley Stadium, ‘the place of living rock’ for the storming finale where the roots of rock are rediscovered and the rebellious bohemians find their way to recreating the music of the Mighty Queen.

Towards the end of Queen’s performance on the DVD Freddie Mercury addresses the audience: “There’ve been some rumours we’re splitting. They’re talking through their *****,” Freddie says. “We’ll be together forever.”

“And in a way,” says Brian, “I guess we were. We might not have been a touring band much longer, but we were together as a band right until the end.”

“I don’t think anyone expected the Magic tour to be the band’s last dates; things had gone so well and we were already planning the next one,” says Gerry Stickells, Queen’s tour manager. “There was no sense of anything coming to an end”.

But as things turned out, Queen only ever played 2 further UK concerts, in Manchester on July 16 and that final concert at Knebworth on August 9.
But if ever a reminder was needed of why Queen earned themselves the mantle of best stadium rock group in history, then you only have to turn to this DVD to see Queen live, uncut, and at their ferocious, majestic, best.

Als dat zo is, zal ik ze allemaal weer gaan aanschaffen, of mooier nog in 1 box (de remastered cd's in 5.1 sound).

Hoewel het een live opname is, is Live Killers mijn favo cd.

het beste nummer ooit is voor mij ook van Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody. Daarna komt Innuendo. Vind ik persoonlijk een 2e moderne Bohemian. Maargoed dat is mijn gevoel en mening.

Wat al eerder genoemd wordt is dan ook zeker jammer dat Queen nagenoeg nooit in 1 adem genoemd wordt als een van de beste bands of live acts. Terwijl ze zo kunnen meegaan met de Stones of U2.

Zou inderdaad mooi zijn als Wembley een blu-ray release krijgt.
Zal voor de beeldkwaliteit niet veel uitmaken aangezien het op video is vastgelegd en niet op film (een stukje van Wembley zit in de bovengenoemde documentaire maar wint in HD niets aan beeldkwaliteit) maar voor het geluid (waar het om gaat) zou geweldig zijn. Voorlopig zullen we het moeten stellen met Queen Rock Montreal...

Adam Lambert nieuwe zanger Queen

De droom van zanger Adam Lambert is werkelijkheid geworden. Hij is de nieuwe zanger van de legendarische band Queen.



De dolgelukkige zanger, die zijn liefde voor de band nooit onder stoelen of banken heeft geschoven, maakte zelf het nieuws bekend.

“Het is de bedoeling om een eerbetoon aan Freddie Mercury te brengen en om te gekke nummers te spelen”, onthulde Adam aan Daily Star. "We houden de muziek in leven en geven het optreden een energie waar Freddie trots op zou zijn.”

Komende zomer start de tour van Queen met Adam als zanger.

Die combinatie heeft al eens opgetreden bij een MTV-award show. Die MTV-shows zijn normaal gesproken gevuld met wat tegenwoordig voor artiest moet doorgaan, dus de enige reden om wèl te kijken was het aangekondigde eerbetoon aan en optreden van Queen. Dat bleek helaas met deze zanger te zijn en het was dan ook een zware teleurstelling. Echt zo'n lichtgewicht emo-wimp die er werkelijk niks van bakte. Niet dat ik zo'n fan was van Queen met Paul Rodgers, maar Rodgers is tenminste nog een zanger die z'n mannetje staat op het podium en een stevig potje kan zingen.

Ik had ergens gelezen dat Freddie Mercury fan was van Paul Rodgers, dus de keuze voor Paul kan ik dan wel begrijpen.

May en Taylor zijn geweldige muzikanten en in mijn optiek ook super zangers, maar als ze de klassieke Queen-nummers willen brengen dan hebben ze er een 3e zanger / leadzanger bij nodig.

Afgaand op het solowerk van Lambert heeft hij genoeg power om de stukken op zijn manier in te zingen. Zolang het maar een eigen draai krijgt.

Ik zou deze combo best eens live willen zien, voor de originele Queen was ik nog wat te jong destijds, Queen en Paul Rodgers is er nooit van gekomen.

Dat ze een leadzanger nodig hebben is voor iedereen wel duidelijk, maar dat ze uitgerekend deze zanger kiezen zal voor veel fans toch wel de nodige vraagtekens opwerpen. Er zijn toch wel betere zangers te vinden dan iemand die vooral bekend is van een talentenjacht. Bovendien vind ik deze zanger meer een geforceerde kopie van Mercury dan z'n voorgangers (Rodgers en de gelegenheid-leadzangers tijdens het Tribute-concert) en menig zanger van bands die Queen-nummers hebben gecoverd.

Op basis van de naam Queen zullen de concertkaartjes best goed verkopen, maar ik denk dat het merendeel van de fans toch liever een andere zanger hadden gezien.

Ik zal het misschien verkeerd zien, maar deze combi vind ik echt niks.

En daarbij vind ik het ook nog eens erg raar staan :

Brian May word 65 dit jaar, Roger Taylor word 63 en Adam lambert is 29 januari 30 geworden.

Nu lijkt het net of ze met het zoontje van ze op toernee zijn.

Als ze een goede zanger zouden kiezen (die er echt wel zijn) die ouder is, meer naar hun leeftijd staat, dan staat het veel beter.

Nee, John Deacon heeft het idd goed gezien door te stoppen.

Dit doet gewoon afbreuk aan de Legacy.

Ik snap wel dat de heren als rasmuzikanten willen blijven spelen, maar probeer het dan wel goed te doen.

Ik zie ze liever als mensen die hun collectie na/uit spitten, en mooie uitgave's uitbrengen, om zo de Legacy hoog te houden, dan nu als mensen die de naam Queen laten afbrokkelen.

Nu kunnen ze wel blijven spelen, maar de mensen blijven toch Freddie zien, in plaats van deze lichtgewicht.

Ik ben geen Queen fan maar Adam Lambert is toch wel een geweldige zanger hoor. Zijn bereik is abnormaal.......niet veel zangers kunnen wat hij wel kan.

Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live In Budapest ‘86 is a must–see event for Queen fans released in cinemas worldwide from 20 September 2012. The film is expected to play on screens in over 30 territories worldwide. In the UK it will be screened in all the major cities, around 100 cinemas nationwide.

Originally filmed in 1986, this momentous concert movie has been re-mastered in high definition and superb 5.1 surround sound for its first–ever cinema screening and opens with a special 25 minute documentary feature following legends of rock, Queen, from just after their historic show–stealing performance at Live Aid on 2 July 1985 through the following year leading up to the concert in Budapest.

As part of the hugely successful 1986 Magic Tour that, poignantly, was the last to be played by Freddie Mercury, Queen were for the first time able to include Hungary on the tour schedule.

With three years to go before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this was the largest concert ever staged at the Népstadion, Budapest, and the first Western Rock Concert staged in a stadium behind the then Iron Curtain. It was of such significance to the Hungarian authorities and film industry that a group of the country’s top film cameramen and technicians were brought together to film it for posterity.

Staged for 80,000 ecstatic fans, the concert set includes favourite hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, I Want To Break Free and We Are The Champions. The resulting concert movie has been digitally re-mastered for the big screen and is introduced by a documentary feature that gives the inside track on events leading up to the Budapest concert.

Using archive footage from rehearsals, interviews with the band and on the road during the Magic Tour – some of which has never been seen before – this fascinating intro feature has been specially created for the cinema release.

25 years after the original release of the lead single, Queen singer Freddie Mercury’s most self-defining and personal work, his ‘Barcelona’ album recorded in collaboration with Spanish operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé, is to have a special re-release in an entirely newly orchestrated re-working.

The special anniversary version of the album ‘Barcelona – The Special Edition’ is released September 3, coming around what would have been the singer’s 66th birthday.

The original Barcelona album, named after the Spanish city who would host the Olympics in 1992 and for which Mercury had been asked to write the theme song, was to become the final solo work Mercury would complete.

The title was also a tribute to the home city of his beloved recording partner Montserrat Caballé with whom Freddie was captivated and had planned to perform the title song with at the opening of the 1992 Olympics opening ceremony. Sadly Mercury passed away eight months before this could happen.

But the album gave Mercury a million selling record and posthumously a chart topping single when the song Barcelona was chosen by BBC TV as its title music to its coverage of the Olympics.

One of the most audacious, and groundbreaking musical collaborations of the 80’s, ‘Barcelona’ was for Freddie the embodiment of his long held fantasy of combining rock and opera and realizing his dream of collaborating with the woman of whom he said after first seeing her performing at London’s Royal Opera House in 1981, "I have now heard the best voice in the world".

Freddie had gone to the Opera House to see Luciano Pavarotti in Verdi’s ‘Un ballo in maschera’. Freddie had heard him on record but never seen him live. However, as impressive as Pavarotti clearly was, it was the mezzo soprano who blew Freddie away. He was later to play his manager Jim Beach a record of Montserrat Caballé. “I wish to record with her”, Freddie told an astonished Jim. “Please arrange it.”

Beach arranged a first meeting, at the Ritz hotel in Barcelona.

Freddie took with him pianist / arranger, Mike Moran, together with a demo recording they had prepared for Montserrat entitled “Exercises in Free Love” which Freddie had sung in falsetto imitating her voice. Freddie’s team had arranged for a massive PA system to be installed in the garden at the Ritz where they met and Freddie played his demo to Montserrat the moment she arrived. “Could I sing it next Sunday at my recital at Covent Garden?” Montserrat asked on hearing it. They rehearsed it then and there and the album Barcelona was born.

Nicely completing the circle between that first encounter between Freddie and Montserrat, this new edition brings to the album for the first time as an extra track Freddie’s original vocal performance of ‘Exercises in Free Love’ which Montserrat heard in the garden of the Ritz and formed the seed of their collaboration.

The ‘Barcelona’ Special Edition album will be at the centre of a new groundswell of interest in the work of the late singer who died in November 1991 and in whose memory his birthday is now marked each year with the HIV AIDS fundraising day, ‘Freddie For A Day’.



Arriving at the same time will be a major new documentary “The Great Pretender” and a freshly authored and illustrated book, “Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender - A Life in Pictures” which is released on September 3rd (Goodman,£25).
The re-created Barcelona album is being hailed as the version Mercury would have wanted to make at the time had he felt able to work with a full symphony orchestra.



Mercury recorded his original album almost entirely on keyboards. This 2012 special edition replaces Mercury and co-writer and producer Mike Moran’s synthesized arrangements with a full symphonic orchestral score performed by the eighty piece FILMharmonic Orchestra, Prague, one of the most sought after recording orchestras in Central Europe, featuring leading members from Czech foremost orchestras (Czech Philharmonic, Prague Symphony).

Called on to transcribe and re-orchestrate the Mercury and Montserrat Caballé tracks which featured on the original album was arranger and music director Stuart Morley whose connection with Queen and Mercury lie in his MD role of the band’s hit musical We Will Rock You. Morley is at the heart of this new special edition of the album; alongside Queen sound engineer Kris Fredriksson, Morley is also its producer.

Morley set about creating a new score by “basically listening to the album over and over in short sections and noting down the harmonic structure, lead orchestral lines and instrumental voicings along with the vocal lines. I then proceeded to expand into making a full orchestral score (with a 2B pencil, ruler and erases –the old fashioned way) working at the piano and constantly referring back to the original recordings to make sure the work I was doing remained faithful to Freddie and Mike Moran’s original intentions.”

Morley also cites as important references along the way: “Rimsky Korsakov's treatise on orchestration as well as various orchestral scores including Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony, Scheherzade and Dubussy's La Mer. It was important to me,” he says, “that the re-orchestration was constructed and voiced in an authentic classical style whilst remaining faithful to the sound world of the original album.”

After months at the pencil and eraser, Morley arrived at the first day of recording in Prague. “I remember feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement when I made the short walk from the hotel to the studio. Hearing just over 80 people tune up before striking the first notes when the conductor gives their first downbeat is always slightly nerve racking for an arranger, but these feeling were amplified ten-fold because of my knowledge, respect and admiration of the original album and its creators."

“I'll never forget the wave of emotion that hit me later on that day when I was handed the headphones while we were recording one of the tutti sections from ‘The Fallen Priest’ (which was incidentally the biggest and most challenging orchestration to complete) and I felt the sheer power of the orchestra giving it their all, with Freddie and Montserrat soaring over the top of it. That was the moment I knew that we were a part of something really special.”

In addition to the orchestral score performed by the Prague FILMharmonic Orchestra, other live instruments have been added for the first time. Naoko Kikuchi, one of the few koto players in the western world, flew especially to London to add the ancient oriental instrument to ‘La Japonaise’. Rufus Taylor, Queen band member Roger Taylor’s son, has replaced the drum machines on ‘The Golden Boy’ and ‘How Can Go On’ with live percussion. The latter song also boasts a new violin solo from classical violinist David Garrett joining Queen’s John Deacon’s original bass part.

‘Barcelona - The Special Edition’ is finally the album it should have been. The world will undoubtedly rediscover and fall in love with it all over again. The only downside is that the visionary behind this masterpiece is sadly not around to hear it too.

Ik vond het wel één van hun mindere "live" CD's. Live Killers vond ik vele malen beter. Ik had ook altijd een aantal bootlegs, maar die heb ik in de loop der jaren verkocht.

Van de tour waarvan Live Magic is samengesteld kun je beter Live at Wembley kopen. Dan heb je tenminste een volledig concert in plaats van een samenraapsel van slecht gemonteerde losse nummers. Live Killers is uiteraard een veel betere live cd; in die periode was Queen nog een stuk dynamischer. En ze gebruikten nog geen synthesizers. Ik zie ook liever concerten uit de jaren zeventig verschijnen dan weer een ander concert van de Magic-tour.

Bootlegs zijn volgens mij niet zo moeilijk te vinden in het internettijdperk. Van Queen is in wisselende kwaliteit best het een en ander te vinden, uit zo'n beetje alle periodes van hun carrière. Er zijn links en rechts de nodige blogs die zich specifiek richten op bootlegs. Op youtube zijn daarnaast complete concerten te vinden. Google is je vriend. En anders nieuwsgroepen of een filesharing-programma.

Vandaag (24 November) is het helaas alweer 22 jaar geleden dat mijn allergrootste muzikale held ''Freddie Mercury'' overleed op de te jonge leeftijd van 45.

Daarom een van de allermooiste nummers, die ooit door Freddie gezongen zijn als eerbetoon aan deze grote kanjer :
