Torchwood Season Three AND Four News

Many thanks to Canadian journo Malene Arpe for sending us the following titbit. It’s from her blog for Canadian newspaper The Toronto Star, for which she interviewed John Barrowman. Although the piece was supposed to be about the Canadian How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria, Malene, being a Torchwood fan (apparently SFX helped turn her onto the show), couldn’t help but ask about season three. Here’s what she got out of him:
“I just had the undiluted pleasure of interviewing that hot piece of actor, John Barrowman aka Captain Jack. I had read that the third season of Torchwood was going to be only five episodes and was wondering why. Well, the reason is the show, which started on BBC3, and then got promoted to BBC2, is now going to BBC1 and they want to start there with a splash and give the move a greater impact. "But if we come back for series four, it will be ten episodes."
For the full blog, with loads more from Barrowman, go here.
UPDATE: The Official Torchwood site has named the show’s new producer as well as revealing that Euros Lyn – acclaimed director of such Who episodes as "The End of the World”, "Tooth and Claw" and "Silence in the library"/"Forest of the Dead" – will be calling the shots on episodes of sesason three. (Since season three is just one five-episode story we asume he'll be doing the whole lot, but that isn’t confirmed on the site).
The new producer is Peter Bennett, who, the site says, has previously worked on Torchwood and Doctor Who as assistant diretor, as well as a second unit director on The Mummy and A View to a Kill, and location manager on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

    Torchwood on Radio 4
    Torchwood
    September 9, 2008 • Posted By Marcus
Torchwood comes to BBC Radio Four this Wednesday 10th September at 14.15 UK time as part of the station's Big Bang Day coverage.

The 45-minute episode, Lost Souls, was written by Joseph Lidster and stars John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Gareth David-Lloyd and Freema Agyeman.

The story is set in CERN, the home of the Large Hadron Collider, which this week will attempt what is described as the most powerful physics experiment in history. The Radio 4 website features an article on the use of CERN in science fiction, including the episode of Torchwood.

The play can be heard in the UK on BBC Radio 4 FM and around the world via the Radio 4 website. It will then be available for one week via the Listen Again feature.

Torchwood go to Geneva where Martha Jones, ex-time traveller, is now working as a doctor for a UNIT task force at the world’s biggest physics laboratory, CERN. Deep in an underground tunnel, a giant particle accelerator is about to be activated for the first time. But something strange is happening. Scientists are hearing voices and collapsing with a strange illness. Is something lurking in the underground tunnel? Do the dead ever really stay dead?

NYCC 09: Torchwood Season 3 Details Revealed

Eva Myles and director Euros Lyn talk about Captain Jack's return.

February 7, 2009 - A completely packed room were incredibly excited for the Torchwood panel at New York Comic Con today. Such was their fandom, that the only thing that got a boo instead of a cheer was the news that an exact date is still to be confirmed for the BBC America debut of Season 3 of the show.

The trailer for the new season was shown, along with a behind-the-scenes featurette in which one of the many times the crowd cheered occurred when John Barrowman ("Jack Harkness") was seen saying that the character of Rhys "is being brought into the team more" this year.

Called Children of Earth, Season 3 of Torchwood is actually a bit different in that it's a five-episode miniseries. Euros Lyn, a veteran of many Doctor Who episodes, is directing the entire season and said going into it he was "Really keen to do something different. It was an opportunity to tell a story in a way we haven't before. " He promised that Children of Earth is "Grander and more epic. By the end of the season, you'll be holding onto your seats. "

Also on hand was Torchwood star Eva Myles, who declared, "There's so much in store for you guys. This series is absolutely epic. It's been written and directed and performed beautifully." She said that the theme of the season was "How the past comes back and bites you in the behind" and that there was 'this force coming back to try and mess with the Torchwood gang."

Check out the preview for Torchwood: Season 3 - Children of Earth

Season 2 ended with the death of two of the main characters, Owen and Tosh, on Torchwood, and Myles noted, "The grief that the characters feel for the characters we lost is very real, but this is a new story. We're moving on, we're telling a brand new tale." She said that Owen and Tosh's death remains "A huge symbol of how life is so short sometimes and how dangerous the organization of Torchwood is to be working for." She said that though they may be smaller, the Torchwood team "has to get stronger. They have to get more powerful. They have to work together."

Myles had a lot of praise for her costar Barrowman, who was clearly beloved by the audience, but then got huge laughs revealing "John farts though a lot." As the audience cracked up, she added, "Sorry John, but you do!"

There had been rumors that Doctor Who characters Martha Jones and Mickey Smith might appear in Season 3, and asked about that, Lyn said "We were really keen to get them back." However, he said that the actors that play them are very busy and that ultimately, "It just didn't work out. It was a scheduling thing. However, we have some fantastic characters for you to meet."

One of these new characters is Mr. Frobisher, played by Peter Capaldi. Lyn said Capaldi "Plays the grayest ranking civil servant. He finds himself in the middle of the biggest terror to face the Earth so far. So he's a very reluctant protagonist… or antagonist. He's somewhere in the middle!"

Asked if Gwen might be kissing anyone besides Rhys this question, Myles replied, "It wouldn't be Torchwood without a little bit of [that]. It's a cheeky program!" She added, "Everything you love about Torchwood, I think you'll get double time in this [season]." As to who she might be kissing, she added, "You'll have to wait and see!"

The fans asking questions showed their adoration for the show, with many glowing compliments and words of praise. One especially exuberant gentleman also asked Lyn and Myles if they'd like to go out drinking with him that night, proclaiming, "I will get you f**ked up tonight!" Myles laughed and replied, "You New Yorkers are cheeky, cheeky!"
Myles promised there would be moments of levity in Season 3, remarking, "The theme of the story is so dark, you've got to get humor in there, otherwise the darkness doesn't work. The characters are in top form," adding that they will continue to be "funny and will have you laughing your head off."

Asked what it was like to very quickly be asked to kiss another woman when she joined Torchwood, she replied, "You've just got to do it. You've got to be professional." She added, "I don't go around snogging girls. But she was hot, so I enjoyed."

James Marsters is not back in Season 3 as Captain John, but Myles said she loved working with him and that "If we get to do another [season], who knows? If I was in charge of hiring, I would hire him! We'll see what happens."

As for Rhys's expanded role, Myles said "It's natural for Rhys to come into more," and that while Torchwood's existence may have been a secret, since the series began, "A lot's happened that people have seen." Plus she said that Rhys's screen time "Makes for a lot of great drama between Rhys and Jack. It's very funny. "

One fan asked if the character PC Andy gets "the recognition he deserves" this season, and Myles replied, "Oh, he gets the recognition he deserves! He's very funny. He's a great guy. He comes in and out all the time." She added that PC Andy helps Gwen a lot and "He's kind of a catalyst" for some plot turns.

Another fan noted that Captain Jack has kissed lanto Jones (played by Gareth David-Lloyd), and Gwen has kissed Captain Jack, and wondered if perhaps Gwen and lanto could eventually kiss. Myles said she wasn't sure, but did remark "I'm getting so many hot ideas!"

LOL de meeste fans waren (en zijn) toch wel erg boos na Day Four en Five van Children of Earth.

Ik was er zelf ook niet gelukkig mee. Vooral Day Four niet.
