Torchwood is de spin-off serie van Doctor Who (de eerste, want Sarah-Jane investigates komt nog) en men is reeds begonnen aan opnames van een tweede seizoen.

    Torchwood Series Two - details

    News Dated: 16/7/2007

The BBCi Press Office have released some further information on Torchwood Series Two.

Torchwood, the smash-hit thriller drama created by Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies, is currently filming for a new series which will be shown on BBC Two early next year.

Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), Gwen (Eve Myles), Owen (Burn Gorman), Tosh (Naoko Mori) and Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) return as the close-knit team of investigators solving alien and human crimes as they delve into the underworld of modern day Cardiff.

The high-octane storylines, filmed in and around Cardiff, include Torchwood's encounter with a rogue Time Agent; a tragic time-slip from World War One; and a memory-thief who uncovers long-forgotten secrets among the entire team.

Making a special guest appearance in the first episode is James Marsterswho starred as Spike, the punk-goth vampire, in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Commenting on his role in Torchwood, James says: "I am a huge fan of Doctor Who and Torchwood so it was me who knocked on their door.

"I am really excited about the character I am playing. I can't say too much about him, except he is naughty and a bit of a psychopath."

Later on in the run Alan Dale makes a star appearance. Alan is currently appearing in Ugly Betty as Bradford Meade and he is well known for his roles in The O.C., Lost, The West Wing and as Jim Robinson in the Australian hit soap Neighbours.

He said: "I am thrilled to be working on Torchwood and delighted to be in England again. I am a huge fan of British television drama."

Another familiar face among the surprise guest stars is Doctor Who's gorgeous companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) who brings her time-travelling expertise and medical skills to the team halfway through the series.

She says: "I'm really looking forward to working with the Torchwood team and can't wait to start filming.

"It's a huge new challenge and a wonderful opportunity to develop and expand the character of Martha Jones."

Russell T Davies said: "Filming is well underway in Cardiff, and we're aiming to make the show bigger and bolder than ever, as we move to our new home on BBC Two.

"It's too early to start giving things away, but we've got some amazing guest stars, fearsome new aliens, and compelling new storylines that will push the Torchwood team further than ever before."

The 13-part series is written by Chris Chibnall, Catherine Tregenna, Helen Raynor, James Moran, Joseph Lidster, Peter J Hammond, JC Wilsher and Matt Jones.

Created by Davies, with Chris Chibnall as co-producer and lead writer, the first series, which aired on BBC Three last year, achieved the channel's highest ever ratings – with an audience of 2.5 million for the first episode.

Torchwood is executive produced by Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner, Head of Drama in BBC Wales. The producer is Richard Stokes.

    Torchwood latest

The Beeb have finally confirmed that Buffy and Angel star James Marsters is making a guest appearance in the first episode, and released the above pic, which we imagine will have inspired about 5000 slash fiction stories by tomorrow morning.
Says Marsters, "I am a huge fan of Doctor Who and Torchwood so it was me who knocked on their door... I am really excited about the character I am playing. I can't say too much about him, except he is naughty and a bit of a psychopath."
“Naughty”? We’re guessing that’s an understatement. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Barrowman comments, “There’s a scene between he and Jack when they first meet... all I’ll say is, this scene is so hot, so horny, so violent, that all the fans who watch it are going to [censored!]”
Calm down, ladies. And some of you gents.
Another guest star confirmed is Alan Dale – best known initially for his role as Jim Robinson on Neighbours, but latterly for his roles in shows like Ugly Betty, The West Wing, The O.C. and 24.
Russell T Davies also teases some of the storylines, which will include: “Torchwood's encounter with a rogue Time Agent; a tragic time-slip from World War One; and a memory-thief who uncovers long-forgotten secrets among the entire team”. Could Marsters’s character be the “rogue Time Agent”, do you think? Odds-on, we reckon.
Finally, here’s a list of all the writers for the second season:
Chris Chibnall: co-producer of the show, obviously.
Catherine Tregenna: writer of season one’s “Out of Time” and “Captain Jack Harkness”.
Helen Raynor: script editor of Doctor Who; writer of 2007’s Dalek two-parter and last year’s “Ghost Machine”.
James Moran: writer of the horror flick Severance – and an episode of Doctor Who season four.
Joseph Lidster: writer of several of Big Finish’s range of Doctor Who audio adventures.
PJ Hammond: creator of Sapphire and Steel and writer of last year’s “Small Worlds”. (Bet his is the one about “a tragic time-slip from World War One”!)
JC Wilsher: has written for loads of shows, including New Tricks, Dalziel and Pascoe and The Bill.
Matt Jones: executive producer of Shameless and writer of Doctor Who’s “The Impossible Planet”/“The Satan Pit” .

Torchwood season two will air on BBC Two in Spring 2008. Sources: BBC/Chicago Tribune

    Martha on Torchwood
    Torchwood
August 15, 2007 • Posted By Josiah Rowe
The BBC Press Office has released more information about the character of Martha Jones appearing on Torchwood, along with a photograph of Freema Agyeman with the rest of the Torchwood cast.

Agyeman is quoted as saying: "Martha has grown up a lot since Doctor Who. She's now a fully qualified doctor and a bit hardened by life experiences. When she finds out that Captain Jack needs her help, she joins Torchwood for a while. She continues to develop her knowledge of alien intelligence, but this time keeping her feet on the ground.

"These will be invaluable skills to take back with her on future adventures with the Doctor. She outgrew the Doctor, in a sense, and so the next time they meet it will be in a more professional capacity. I'm so proud of her journey and who she has become.

"And for me as an actress, it's a great new challenge to be able to broaden and expand Martha as she develops in other directions for this more adult series. The Torchwood team are fabulous to work with and have made me very welcome."

Agyeman will appear in three episodes of Torchwood, which will air early in 2008. The press release also mentions guest stars James Marsters, Alan Dale and Richard Briers; Briers' character is described as "Parker, a reclusive millionaire who is the keeper of alien secrets, much later in the series."

    Thanks to Ryan Love.

    Torchwood's U.S. roots
    Broadcasting
August 24, 2007 • Posted By Brigadier Bill
Julie Gardner, executive producer of the BBC series Torchwood and head of drama development for BBC Wales, tells SCI-FI WIRE that Torchwood's roots lie in a fascination with American science fiction shows - particularly those in the boom of the 1990s.

She talks about an early series she and Russell T Davies developed called Excalibur which centered around a paranormal investigation team.

"It was a kind of [an] urban-landscape, present-day series," Gardner said.

"And the scene that Russell in his two-page pitch described was the scene where there was this sexy group of investigators in an alleyway at night, it's raining, a corpse is on the ground, and one of them brings out a glove and is able to bring the corpse back to life, which is, of course, the central first scene in Episode 1 of what became Torchwood."

    SCI-FI Weekly grades Torchwood
    Spinoffs
September 8, 2007 • Posted By Brigadier Bill
Reviewer Kathy Huddleston of SCI-FI WEEKLY grades the first episode of Torchwood and gives it an A.

She writes "From Russell T. Davies comes a new series that explores the Earth-bound underbelly of the Doctor Who universe. The American premiere of Torchwood on BBC America offers up an exciting and dark series that goes places where Doctor Who can't."

She goes on to compliment the "grown up" version of Doctor Who and praises the uniqueness of Captain Jack. "The Web site promises Torchwood is a cross between The X-Files and Angel. That's true, but there's also enough Doctor Who in the mix to make us feel at home. Beyond that, we have Capt. Jack, the first bisexual character to lead a sci-fi series. Now that's what I call a new frontier."

    Torchwood breaks records
    Torchwood
    September 13, 2007 • Posted By Marcus
BBC America has said the premiere of Torchwood on the channel delivered the biggest audience of any drama premiere in the 58-million-subscriber network’s history.

The series, shown at 9pm Eastern Time on Saturday nights, attracted 496,000 total viewers, according to network officials.

In the target demographic of persons ages 25 to 54, the premier got 297,000 viewers. That’s slightly ahead of how action drama Robin Hood performed when it premiered last year, at about the same rating (0.42). Viewer numbers were higher for Torchwood than Robin Hood because BBCAmerica is in more homes now.

A second airing, at midnight ET and 9 p.m. PT Saturday, delivered a 0.19 rating (139,000 viewers) in the target demographic, or 241,000 viewers overall.

Figures cited are live viewing and same-day viewing, which adds in a day’s worth of digitally recorded watching.

Meanwhile the series has received some very good reviews in the US press.

The Hollywood Reporter called the series "a crackling good, brilliantly conceived sci-fi series that targets actual grownups" while the Los Angeles Times described the show as "indescribably delicious".

TV Guide said the programme was a "a cheeky and often startlingly adult spin-off" and Variety said it has the fixings of a thinking-man's sci-fi series that doesn't take itself too seriously.

The Kansas City Star says the programme is "one of the best serial dramas to arrive on American television in 2007" and The Philadelphia Inquirer describes it as "by turns super-slick, raw, bizarre, hilarious, spooky, scary and sublimely sexy".

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette calls Torchwood "an adult sci-fi show with a sense of humor", The Seattle Post Intelligencer calls it "a thrilling spinoff" and The San Jose Mercury News says the series is "an imaginative, wickedly funny spinoff from the revived and revitalized Doctor Who".

Thanks to Jim Harper for the US press reviews

In Engeland was na het uitzenden m.n bij de Doctor Who fans een hoop kritiek. Zo erg dat de meeste toch wel naar de 2de serie kijken.

    Hammond's Torchwood Teaser
    Torchwood
September 26, 2007 • Posted By Kenny Davidson
Peter J Hammond, writer of the Torchwood episode Small Worlds, has told the SFX blog that his story for season two of the Doctor Who spin-off will be scarier still.

According to the writer, he has borrowed a plot element from his iconic ITV series Sapphire and Steel, which he created in the early 1980s. Click on the spoiler tag to read more... "I think one of my favourite Sapphire and Steels was the one with Mr Shape going in and out of photographs. Torchwood takes this a bit further and it's people coming out of moving films from the '20s. There are some lovely 'black and white' people in it."

As the SFX blog points out, that particular Sapphire and Steel story by Hammond has inspired two recent writers in their Doctor Who scripts, with the faceless people in The Idiot's Lantern and the trapped-in-mirrors resolution to the Family Of Blood.

Torchwood, the award-winning drama created by Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies, bursts back on our screens in mid-January 2008, this time premiering on BBC Two.

And this time it's bigger and bolder with more fun, adventure and excitement for the alien-fighting team...

Captain Jack Harness (John Barrowman), Gwen (Eve Myles), Owen (Burn Gorman), Toshiko (Naoko Mori) and Ianto (Gareth Lloyd-Davies) return as the investigators delving into the alien underworld of modern day Cardiff.

In response to audience demand, younger fans will now have the opportunity of watching a specially edited pre-watershed repeat.

Roly Keating, Controller BBC Two, says: "We're delighted that Torchwood is joining BBC Two.

"We know from the success and popularity of Heroes that there's a growing appetite for smart, high-quality, sci-fi drama on the channel so Torchwood is a perfect fit.

"I'm also pleased to announce that, due to popular demand from families and younger viewers, we will be showing a special pre-watershed repeat so everyone can enjoy the new series."

Making a special guest appearance in the first episode is James Marsters as Captain John. He starred as Spike, the punk-goth vampire in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Captain John and Captain Jack go way back and have "history".

When he appears through the Rift under Cardiff looking for Captain Jack not only does he disrupt Captain Jack's homecoming but the whole team, city and world are suddenly placed in danger.

The new series promises an exhilarating mixture of adventure, heartbreak, humour and surprise and pushes the team's resolve and friendships as never before.

Firmly rooted in urban life of 21st century Cardiff, Torchwood's investigations into alien activity give the team glimpses of the 51st Century and the First World War.

They encounter alien sleeper cells; save a stranded creature from human exploitation; meet a tragic soldier from the First World War; and encounter a memory thief who exposes long-forgotten secrets among the entire team.

During the run Alan Dale (Ugly Betty, The O.C, Lost and The West Wing) makes a star appearance.

Another familiar face among the special guest stars is Doctor Who's companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) who appears half way through the series.

Richard Briers, Nerys Hughes and Ruth Jones (Gavin And Stacey) also appear in various roles.

Russell T Davies says: "This series pushes the Torchwood team further than ever before. They are joined by some incredible guest stars who are really going to cause waves. It's adventurous, thrilling and packed full of surprises."

Torchwood, which was shot in HD and will also be shown on the BBC HD channel, is filmed in and around Cardiff by BBC Wales.

BBC Wales Controller Menna Richards says: "The first series of Torchwood was a huge hit with audiences. We're extremely proud that it's produced in Wales. And its success is a reflection of the huge wealth of talent and creativity that exists here. We're delighted that it's returning to our screens for another series full of action, humour and excitement."

The 13-part series is written by Chris Chibnall, Phil Ford, Peter J Hammond, Matt Jones, Joseph Lidster, James Moran, Helen Raynor, Catherine Tregenna and JC Wilsher. Created by Davies, with Chris Chibnall as co-producer and lead writer, the first series which aired on BBC Three last year achieved the channel's highest ratings in 2006, with an audience of 2.5 million for the first episode, and peaking at 2.8 million.

There will be a new exciting online reality game and exclusive behind the scenes footage on bbc.co.uk/torchwood.

Torchwood is executive produced by Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner, Head of Drama, BBC Wales. The producer is Richard Stokes.

    Torchwood

The TV Today blog at The Stage previews Wednesday's new episode of Torchwood, "Sleeper", saying that the series as a whole is "massively improved" and that "Sleeper is "sensitively, quietly told" but [feels] "the need to throw blood around with gay abandon."

The Western Mail lists Eve Myles in the "Championship" category of their "Fantasy Fame League" of Welsh celebrity -- the same level as Catherine Zeta-Jones and Charlotte Church. Gareth David-Lloyd is in "League One", the next level down.

TV Guide, The Boston Globe, The Star of Toronto, The Province of Vancouver, iF Magazine, MSN TV and Monsters and Critics all review the Torchwood Season 1 DVD set, which was released in North America on Tuesday.

The Boston Phoenix and the City Weekly of Salt Lake City preview "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" for their readers (Torchwood's second season debuts on BBC America on Saturday, January 26). Many news sources, including the San Francisco Chronicle, the Arizona Republic and the CBC carry an Associated Press article about the season. And the Star-Telegram (Fort Worth, Texas) recommends Torchwood to viewers hungry for heroic characters during the writers' strike.

    Torchwood comes to Radio 4
    Torchwood
April 26, 2008 • Posted By Jarrod Cooper
Team Torchwood is slated to make an appearance on Radio 4 this summer. The 45-minute show, airing as Radio 4's Afternoon Play, has been written by Joseph Lidster (A Day In The Death) and will feature the voices of John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Gareth David-Lloyd and Freema Agyeman. Recorded in March, the story will be transmitted on Radio 4 as part of a day's programming dedicated to the CERN project, expected to air in June or July. According to an interview in Torchwood Magazine with writer Joseph Lidster, Martha calls the team while investigating strange goings-on at the CERN nuclear facility in Switzerland, leading to Torchwood's very first international adventure!

The story will be the first time that Torchwood has not featured Burn Gorman and Naoko Mori, though Lidster says their characters Owen and Tosh, who died at the end of series two, do have a part to play in the story.
"But the story isn’t about death," says Lidster, "and I think it will appeal to those Radio 4 listeners who don't usually watch Torchwood, as well as the fans."
