Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the upcoming release of Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition for 13th November. This package will be released on DVD and Blu-ray formats containing three seamless branched versions of the film, from the first ever home video release of the original theatrical cut, and the re-edited 1980 special edition, to Spielberg's definitive director's cut as featured on the 1998 collector's edition.

In terms of special features, both the DVD and Blu-ray releases will offer a new interview with Stephen Spielberg talking about the film, and a 'making-of' retrospective documentary. The Blu-ray Disc will also provide: a new storyboard-to-screen comparison, a 'Watch the Skies' featurette from 1977 and the original theatrical preview. We will post the cover artwork as soon as it arrives.

PS3 is niet meer zo heel duur. :P Je hebt 'm nu voor €599 (jaja, voor nog geen 600 euro) inc. 2 games en 2 controllers. Valt best mee. Een maandje geen DVD's kopen en je hebt er een. En waarschijnlijk heb je toch nog 100 DVDs te kijken. :P

Wel een fraai boxje trouwens. Ben benieuwd wat 'ie moet gaan kosten.

De lange documentaire van 100 minuten die op de originele DVD staat is dus gesplitst en verdeelt over 3 discs. De Duitse release heeft ook weer DTS-geluid, dus wellicht ook de releases in andere landen.

Dacht dat het een nieuwe documentaire zou zijn. Op de andere versies na vind ik het eigenlijk weinig reden om opnieuw te kopen. De nieuwe remastering zal ook niet veel uitmaken, denk ik. De special effects zijn met een optische printer gedaan, en laten meestal weinig ruimte over voor verbetering.

'Close Encounters Ultimate Edition' DVD preview
Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” celebrates its 30th anniversary this very week, and to mark the occasion, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has re-released the film to standard DVD and is debuting the film in high definition exclusively on the Blu-ray format.

Throughout the years, Steven Spielberg has significantly cut or recut “Close Encounters” three separate times— for the 1977 original theatrical release, the 1980 Special Edition (which famously, or perhaps infamously, included additional footage of protagonist Roy Neary inside the majestic Mothership), and finally, for home video release in 1998 in what was then given the bland moniker The Collector’s Edition. This last edit, which Spielberg considers the final and definitive cut of the film, has been rechristened The Director’s Cut for this new release.

While all three cuts of the film have been available throughout the film’s life on home video since the early 1980s on, The Ultimate Edition represents a Holy Grail that Spielberg fans have coveted since the original DVD release in 2001 (a release that only included what was then known as The Collector’s Edition). For the first time ever, fans can now own all three cuts of the film on a single, digital release, making the Ultimate Edition of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” a cornerstone release in Spielberg’s filmography on home video.

There has of course been a lot of buzz online considering the fact that the film’s release on Blu-ray marks Spielberg’s first theatrical length feature foray into high definition video. For those fans not quite yet ready to delve into the high-def realm just yet, the three-disc standard definition release should certainly serve as more than a stopgap on the way to eventually investing in Blu-ray. This preview of the title will focus on the standard definition set, which includes all three cuts of the film on separate discs, along with hours of bonus feature content.†

Each version of the film has been remastered in high definition, with approval by the director himself. No matter the cut, the film looks cleaner and sharper than ever seen on any standard definition home video, with long muted or washed out colors now given a new appealing vibrancy, texture and shading. For fans accustomed to the look of the film as presented on video for the last couple of decades, certain well-known shots will seem revelatory given the new life breathed into them through digital restoration.

All three cuts are given their own DVD in the set, with disc one devoted to the Original Theatrical Version, disc two the Special Edition and disc three the Director’s Cut. All three versions of the film are presented in anamorphic 2.35:1 video, with powerful remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS surround tracks.

Bonus Features
Despite the limited space for data that DVD offers when compared to Blu-ray, the standard edition DVD set of “Close Encounters” still gives fans the most-important features found on the high-def version. Central amongst the extras is the inclusion of the 2001 documentary “The Making of Close Encounters,” produced by longtime Spielberg documentarian Laurent Bouzereau. While the nearly two-hour retrospective documentary was included on the original DVD release, its an essential document of the film and great to see migrated to the upgrade release. If there’s any gripe at all to be made, it’s for the fact that the “Making of” documentary is split across all three discs in the set (with running times of 39.15, 47.29 and 15.29 across the discs respectively). However, given the lengthy film and various audio tracks available in support of the film on all three discs, one can understand that a decision had to be made to split the documentary up in order to be able to fit it on the standard DVD set.

The other major retrospective look at the film comes on disc three, with the brand new Bouzereau produced “Steven Spielberg: 30 Years of Close Encounters” (21.21). The piece is just over 20 minutes of Spielberg and Spielberg alone looking back at the production and legacy of “Close Encounters.” While the featurette doesn’t include any revelations on the production or Spielberg’s creative process, it’s always, of course, a pleasure to hear the filmmaker talk at length on a subject (much like the similar “Duel” documentary from 2004, or the recent “Spielberg on Spielberg”). Standout segments in the short conversation include Spielberg affectionately discussing two of his key career-long collaborations in that of partners Michael Kahn and John Williams, and their impact on this particular film.

Also included on disc three is the vintage theatrical show reel, “Watch the Skies.” The 5.54 featurette is presented anamorphically. And speaking of vintage marketing material, fans will also be thrilled to know that four previously unannounced trailers for the film are included on the standard DVD set, including the film’s Original Theatrical Preview (6.02) (disc one), the Special Edition Trailer (1.58) (disc two) and the excellent new 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition Trailer (1.35) (disc three). Like “Watch the Skies,” all of the trailers are presented anamorphically, and like the film itself, they've never looked crisper.

Packaging
Easily one of the classiest details of the “30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition,” the packaging will make this edition of “Close Encounters” really stand out as one of the nicest pieces in your Spielberg DVD collection. The entire set is housed in a beautifully designed, sturdy box that features tinted imagery from the film’s legendary landing sequence on nearly every panel inside and out. The sharp design carries on to the contents inside the box, including a tri-gate DVD folder and 64-page scrapbook.

64-page Scrapbook
The scrapbook, included in both the standard and Blu-ray editions of the film, is a generous 64 pages of photos from the film and its production. Many of the photos are very rare, making the book a great collector’s item. It should be said, however, that the text included along with the photos is all but worthless, as it has an embarrassing amount of of factual errors. Enjoy the great photos and ignore the sloppy research and writing that should never have seen print in such a fantastic set for this classic film.

“A View from Above: Feature Comparison Fold-Out Poster"
Finally, a fold-out, two-sided poster featuring the film’s original theatrical key art on one side, and a map of the three different versions and their 28 notable alterations (presented on a timeline) is included to round out the package of this stellar anniversary release of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

If you have a passing interest in the film, you could do much worse than to own what was previously known as the Collector’s Edition of the DVD, as released back in 2001. That cut marks Steven Spielberg’s true intentions for the film, as it is a near-perfect meld of all of the best elements found in the Original Cut and Special Edition cuts of the film. To see the true genius of Spielberg’s work as it evolved across the 1970s, ‘80s and finally, ‘90s, however, the “30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition” release of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” is something that each and every Steven Spielberg fan will cherish having in their libraries.

Ik kocht hem gisteren bij Van Leest. Ik had trouwens eigenlijk helemaal gemist dat er een nieuwe editie zou komen, dus ik was blij verrast. Vooral ook vanwege de aanwezigheid van de Special Edition-versie: ik had niet verwacht dat die versie nog op dvd zou verschijnen, want ik dacht dat Spielberg hem in de "ban" gedaan had.

Vandaag de nieuwe uitgave in mijn handen gehad. Niet gekocht, want ik vond 'm te duur (€ 29,99). Op het eerste gezicht lijkt het een import-uitgave uit de UK, want de leeftijdsaanduideingen uit de UK staan op de voorkant en zijkant. Op de achterkant zit een flyer met de specificaties geplakt. Deze flyer is wel in het Nederlands.

Sony vond het blijkbaar niet rendabel om een aparte verpakking voor Nederland te maken met de Nederlandse leeftijdsaanduidingen. Ze vonden het echter wel rendabel om een aparte verpakking te maken voor Wallonië voorzien van Nederlandse leeftijdsaanduidingen, maar deze is in het Frans.

Oké. Ik heb de uitgave inmiddels besteld bij Bol.com en hoop 'm dinsdag in huis te hebben.

Komt deze box ook in de Benelux uit?

Belangrijker: zal deze box hier ook als bonus de originele soundtrack van Williams bevatten?

De box is afgelopen donderdag in de Benelux uitgebracht, maar op het eerste gezicht ziet deze eruit als de Engelse release. Er staan namelijk geen Nederlandse leeftijdsaanduidingen op de verpakking, alleen Engelse.



Ik had gehoopt de DVD vandaag te ontvangen, maar hij paste niet door de brievenbus, dus TPG heeft een briefje achtergelaten dat ze morgenochtend weer proberen het pakketje af te leveren. Helaas ben ik er dan ook niet (het is wat als je moet werken...). Het zal dus pas donderdag worden voordat ik 'm heb of ze moeten 'm morgen bij de buren afgeven.

En nee, de box bevat (helaas) niet de originele soundtrack van Williams als bonus.
