    Update:

Zack Snyder won’t look back: ‘There’s been no other Superman movies’ [Updated]

    March 16, 2011 | 6:01 p.m.

When Bryan Singer took moviegoers to Metropolis in the 2006 film ”Superman Returns,” he paid careful homage to the hero’s cinematic past. Don’t expect that approach from Zack Snyder, who on Wednesday shared his guiding principle: ”Respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.”
Snyder’s version of the Man of Steel is scheduled to reach theaters in December 2012 with Henry Cavill in the title role, and the director said that this will be the first modern Superman feature that will truly break from Richard Donner’s landmark 1978 film, which shared its star, Christopher Reeve, with three sequels and then also deeply informed Singer’s 2006 film, which put Brandon Routh in the iconic blue tights but tapped into both style and story elements from the work of Donner and Reeve.
“Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there’s been no other Superman movies,” Snyder said. “If you look at ‘Batman Begins,’ there’s that structure, there’s the canon that we know about and respect, but on other hand there’s this approach that pre-supposes that there haven’t been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.”
I mentioned to Snyder that in hindsight the Singer film might have been boxed in by the past and too tentative — the movie seemed at times like a cautious curator trying to move around among fragile museum pieces. “Yeah, and we’re not afraid of that at all,” Snyder said. “Our Superman, he’s got things to figure out, but he’s a physical cat.”
Snyder’s next film, “Sucker Punch,” which he co-wrote with Steve Shibuya, opens in theaters on March 25. The filmmaker is in intense preparations now for the Superman revival (it will likely be titled “Man of Steel” but that decision isn’t final yet), which will begin shooting soon with a script by David S. Goyer. The cast will also include Diane Lane as Martha Kent.
[Updated at 7:23 p.m.: A previous version of this post listed Kevin Costner as a cast member, but his involvement with the project has only been rumored.]
On further casting Snyder would say only: “There’s more to come and I think it’s consistent in its … awesomeness.”

I told Snyder I was interested to see how he and his wife and producing partner, Debbie Snyder, would collaborate with the producer team of Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas – another married couple who have put themselves at the center of the Warner Bros. present and future when it comes to blockbuster ventures. Nolan, of course, directed the two most recent Batman films, which many people consider the pinnacle of superhero cinema, while Thomas has been the producer of every Nolan film, including last year’s “Inception,” which was nominated for the best picture Oscar.
“It’s been really great,” Snyder said of the collaboration so far. “Chris is awesome. He’s super-respectful but super-helpful, too. You can’t imagine a more generous [collaborator] … once he sort of got what I want to do with it, he was like, ‘OK,’ and once he said, ‘You know what, that’s awesome,’ now he’s 100%. If I say, ‘What do you think of this?’ he’s like, ‘That’s awesome,’ and then there’s a great give-and-take about it, a great conversation that we can have about it and making it better every day. And by the way, he’s hilarious too.”
Snyder said he can’t contain his excitement when he considers the paradox of Superman at this point in time — as the first signature superhero, the character has an unrivaled legacy and appeal, but as far as live-action film goes, the Donner version and Singer’s spin-off define Superman for contemporary moviegoers (although Kirk Alyn and George Reeves also flew across the silver screen in the 1940s and 1950s).

“Superman is the one constant in the universe,” Snyder said. “You know that if you do Superman right — or at least if you do him with respect — you know you end up with something great. … [but] in some ways [beyond] that is virgin territory. No one knows what that is. In some ways Superman is the most recognizable superhero on the planet but also the most unknown. Just what he can be? People have preconceived ideas about him but probably all of them are wrong.”
I asked if Snyder had anything he could share about the costume that Cavill will wear. ”I can’t say — although I appreciate the question. I’d love to talk about it. We’re going to have to show it before we shoot, probably a while before that because [otherwise] someone will be on the set and get a picture of it.”
Snyder sounded a bit weary, and that’s no surprise considering the impending release of “Sucker Punch” and the world-class pressure of getting Superman off the ground for Warner Bros. I asked if he ever looks at the size of the task and gets intimidated by the sheer scale of it. “It is epic. But you just start with page 1, shot 1 and the next thing you know, you’re in it. And then you can’t go back. It’s the journey of 1,000 steps, as they say.”

    Kevin Costner Confirmed for Superman!

    Source: Warner Bros. Pictures
    March 18, 2011

Warner Bros. Pictures has confirmed that Kevin Costner will play Jonathan Kent in the Zack Snyder-directed Supermanmovie! Here is the official press release:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Kevin Costner will play Jonathan Kent, the father who raised Clark Kent as his own son, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.

Snyder stated, “Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time.”

Costner will star alongside Diane Lane, who plays his wife, Martha, and the film’s star, Henry Cavill, who will play the new Clark Kent/Superman.

Costner most recently starred in 2010’s “The Company Men,” and is currently in development on the comedy “The One.” He has won two Academy Awards®, for producing and directing the epic “Dances with Wolves,” also garnering a nomination for Best Actor. He has also starred in a wide range of memorable films, including “The Untouchables,” “No Way Out,” “Bull Durham,” “Field of Dreams,” “JFK,” “The Bodyguard,” “Wyatt Earp,” “Tin Cup” and “Swing Vote,” to name a few.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

The new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

    Michael Shannon Is Superman's Zod
    Zack Snyder picks a nemesis...

Zack Snyder has his hero in Henry Cavill as Superman. Now he’s also found a villain and we couldn’t be happier with the choice: Michael Shannon will play General Zod.
The rumours about the Super-villain have been flying thick and fast, with claims and counter-claims about whether the character, so memorably portrayed by Terence “Kneel before Zod!” Stamp in the Richard Donner/Richard Lester Superman films, would even be appearing in the new movie. Then talk shifted to who might play him, with Viggo Mortensen in the frame as a likely villain.
Now, though, Shannon – who has more than proved himself in work as diverse as Revolutionary Road, The Runaways, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant and, on the small screen as the creepy driven Agent Van Alden in Boardwalk Empire – is Snyder’s man for the job.
"Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role," Snyder said in a release picked up by the Heat Vision blog.
That insight, of course, stems from the fact that Zod is a fellow Kryptonian with similar powers to Supes, albeit with a twisted, bitter heart instead of an incessant need to do good.
Shannon’s Zod will be seen alongside Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and Ma and Pa Kent (Diane Lane and Kevin Costner). With a script from David S Goyer and producing assistance from Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas, Snyder gets started on the movie in August for a December 2012 release date.

    Superman has a Villainness
Antje Traue will go bad for the role

There are differing opinions on whether she’s signed a final deal yet, but it does appear that German actress Antje Traue has landed the villainess role Faora in Warner Bros. new Superman pic, Man of Steel.
Variety brings word that Traue, last seen alongside Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster in Pandorum, has snagged the key evil role of the female Kryptonian who causes plenty of trouble for Henry Cavill’s hero.
There’s also some debate exactly what she’ll end up being called, since there are several Faora characters through the run of the Superman comics across the years. One was a man-hating type who mastered a Kryptonian martial art based on pressure points that could defeat the Man of Steel in a fight. Another was an aide to General Zod (who’ll be played by Michael Shannon in the Snyder film) and who was the inspiration for Ursa in Superman and Superman II.
A hat tip must be offered here to Latino Review, which has been getting the early word on lots of Super-details, including the female villain and the inclusion of Lois Lane (now to be played by Amy Adams).
Snyder’s getting ready to shoot this summer in Chicago with Cavill, Shannon, Adams, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane already in the cast. Superman: Man Of Steel (or whatever the final title might be) will be out around December 2012.

Schaamteloos kopieeren uit `n ander topic:

Eerst pic van Henry Cavil als Supes.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have provided the first look at the new Man of Steel, revealing star Henry Cavill as Superman in the film from director Zack Snyder.

The film also stars three-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams (The Fighter) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar® nominee Laurence Fishburne (What's Love Got to Do with It) as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent's adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar® nominee Diane Lane (Unfaithful) and Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves).

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), and Faora, Zod's evil partner, played by Antje Traue. Also from Superman's native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman's mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman's father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator).
Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.

Man of Steel is being produced by Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer, from a story by Goyer and Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.
