Ken Russell (1927-2011)
Hij leeft nog, maar kwakkelt nogal met zijn gezondheid en heeft sinds eind jaren '80 praktisch geen film meer kunnen maken. Hij maakt nu letterlijk films in zijn achtertuin met een digitale camera. Heeft in Big Brother gezeten en is getrouwd met een van zijn grootste fans: nadat er weer een huwelijk stukgelopen was had hij een advertentie op internet gezet "unbankable film director Ken Russell seeks soulmate. Is mad about music, movies en Moet & Chandon champagne". Dat laatste gedeelte van de omschrijving had ook net zo goed op mij kunnen slaan, vandaar dat ik zo van Russell houd vermoedelijk.
Maar goed, belangrijkste ontwikkeling is natuurlijk dat zijn controversiële meesterwerk 'The Devils' uit 1971 EINDELIJK op DVD verschijnt in Engeland, in maart bij BFI. Zowel goed als slecht nieuws, want het mocht geen blu-ray worden van Warner Bros. en het is niet de complete versie, aangezien de meest beruchte scene uit de film, The Rape of Christ, niet op de DVD zal staan. Hiermee is het vermoedelijk de enige film ter wereld die maar dan 40 (!) jaar na dato nog steeds gecensureerd wordt.
