Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment has announced the launch of a new line of DVDs: "The Superbit™ Collection." These new discs utilize a special high bit rate digital encoding process to optimize the video quality. The discs will also offer Dolby Digital and DTS soundtrack options on the same disc. The audio bit rates will be 448 kbps (Dolby) and 754 kbps (DTS).
The new discs are not scheduled to include any supplements.
As quoted in Sony's press release, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment president Benjamin S. Feingold, stated: "The Superbit™ Collection will set a new benchmark in audio and video quality for the DVD format. This new process was developed by our outstanding group of engineers and technicians at the Sony Digital Studios and was designed to give consumers a choice between the highest quality audio and video transfer at a competitive price versus our standard, rich package of value added features."
The five titles included in the initial launch are scheduled to be: "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Johnny Mnemonic," "The Fifth Element," "Air Force One," and "Desperado." The SRP will be $27.96.
In addition, a Superbit™ 3-pack will be offered for $73.95 (consisting of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Desperado," and "The Fifth Element").
