Ian McKellen talked to TVNewZealand’s Good Morning about the fate of the movie, first giving a brief teaser as to some upcoming announcement.
I’ve no news to give you, except that an announcement is imminent, and what it will be I genuinely don’t know. It’ll either be that we’re going ahead, or that we’re not.
But when pressed further about his involvement, McKellen says what many have been fearing, he might walk if the film doesn’t sort itself out soon.
Well, I’m not under contract. And my time is running out. I’m enjoying working in the theatre and, frankly, I would like to race after doing Waiting for Godot and get on with doing another play, but we’ll have to see. I don’t want to give the producers the impression that I’m sitting waiting.
"It is intriguing and useful to listen to the sacred rhetoric of the cinema groups and intellectual critics, but very little of it gets up on the screen in the next picture." -Jerry Lewis

Source: Argyllshire Standard, TheOneRing.net
August 29, 2010
Scottish actor Sylvester McCoy ("Doctor Who") revealed to the Argyllshire Standard that he is in talks to join The Hobbit:
Mr McCoy told the Standard that contrary to widespread internet rumours, he's not vying for the role of Bilbo in The Hobbit (due to start filming next year) - but is one of two actors being considered for one of the wizard parts.
"I am being cast in The Hobbit," he said. "We're currently in negotiations - there are two of us under consideration. It's not the Bilbo role, but could be bigger."
TheOneRing.net speculates that he may be playing Radagast the Brown.

Wizards ?

Martin Freeman May be Hobbit Frontrunner
Source: EW
September 8, 2010
Martin Freeman may be at the very top of the list of potential Hobbit leads, according to a report at EW.
Freeman, best known for his performance as Tim on the original "The Office," would play Bilbo Baggins, a humorless Hobbit unwittingly thrust into the life of an adventurer. Ian Holm portrayed Bilbo in the "Lord of the Rings" films, set decades after the events of The Hobbit.
Freeman reportedly turned down the role due to a previous commitment to the BBC series "Sherlock." Now, EW claims that an offer has been made to Freeman that would work The Hobbit shooting into his schedule.
Though official details are still unannounced, progression on The Hobbit would seem to indicate that New Line/Warner Bros. and MGM are close to working out the financial issues that have been holding back production.

Volgens theonering wordt Neil Blomkamp toch regisseur. Wat is jullie mening hierover? Goede of slechte keuze?

The Hobbit Eyeing January Start?
Source: The Bolton News
September 14, 2010
Although official word on a resolution to The Hobbit's troubled production has not been yet been announced, Ian McKellen has just told The Bolton News that he will be returning as Gandalf and that, "the aim is to start filming in January."
Two "Hobbit" films (which will be shot back to back) are still officially without a director, but it is has been heavily suggested that writer/producer Peter Jackson will helm (as he did with all three "Lord of the Rings" films). Regardless, if the financial issues surrounding MGM and their share of the rights have been resolved, expect an studio announcement very soon.
