Superman: Ultimate Collector's Edition (14-DVD!)
Jan 31, 2006

Warner Home Video unveils a Superman 14-Disc Collection During a press event earlier today, Warner Home Video made a fairly sensational announcement that is sure to please fans of the “Superman” films. The studio has a 14-disc DVD set in the making of "Superman." The set, called Superman: Ultimate Collector’s Edition is filled with featurettes, documentaries, and other stuff surrounding the Superman feature films, as well as all these films themselves. However, best of all, the set will also contain the Richard Donner Cut of Superman 2! As fans will undoubtedly know, Richard Donner was relieved as a director from the film and replaced by Richard Lester before he could complete the film. Still, 70% of the movie were finished at the time but never released, of course ,though part of his footage was actually used in Lester’s “Superman2 “ version. But not nearly all of it. There is about 45 minutes of footage that has never been seen before – especially not the way Richard Donner had envisioned it! Now, the studio is working with Donner to create the cut of the movie that he had in mind originally, which is VERY cool, of course, painstakingly restored. During the press event we were treated to a five-minute clip from the film - the opening sequence which had never before been seen - and it was a blast! Get ready for this one, because it’s going to be huge! Bron: www.dvdreview.com.

IGN: There have been rumors for years that your cut will come out on DVD.

Donner: They're doing it. I'm not doing it. They're doing it. Michael Thaw, who used to be my assistant and is a good little editor - [said that] there were so many requests to Warner Brothers to see my cut that he went to them and they authorized it. He's been working for about four or five months now getting all the negatives and cuts out of England. A lot of it's been destroyed, a lot of it wasn't kept. But everything that he was able to [get], he said it will probably be about 70 percent my footage.

IGN: So the rest will be footage Lester shot?

Donner: Yeah. I don't even want to see it until it comes out in the theater.

IGN: But you do want to see it?

Donner: Oh, s**t yeah! But I don't want to cut it. I mean, I'm too far away from it now.

NO EXTENDED SUPERMAN IV

Warner Bros. told me today that they currently have no plans to present a longer cut of Superman IV. I heard to the contray but I didn't believe it, glad I didn't. UPDATE: Plans have yet to be finalised on the final contents of the boxset so it's still a possibilty.

In celebration of the year of Superman Warner Home Video have announced a host of Region 1 DVD releases for 28th November 2006, all starring the late Christopher Reeve in his landmark portrayal of the Man of Steel. Leading the way will be the long-awaited Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut ($24.98 SRP), directed by Donner and representing Superman II as it was originally conceived and intended to be filmed. An overwhelmingly requested title, the movie features Donner's original footage, shot but never used before, including a never-before-seen beginning, a never-before-seen resolution, with 15 minutes of restored footage of Marlon Brando as Jor-El and much more.

Other titles to be released include Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition ($39.92 SRP) which features both the DVD debut of the 1978 theatrical version as well as the 2001 extended edition with commentary from director Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz, archival footage of additional scenes and screen tests.

Richard Lester's ever-popular Superman II will be available in a new Two Disc Special Edition ($26.99 SRP) including a new featurette, vintage television specials and additional vault elements; and Superman III and Superman IV Deluxe Editions ($19.97 SRP). Finally, The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection ($79.92 SRP) will be offered in an 8-disc boxed set including all the above (except Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut).

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Superman II will delight fans who, for years, have been imploring Warner Home Video via voluminous numbers of petitions, letters, phone calls and e-mails to release the Donner cut.

In fact, Donner had already shot most of the Superman II footage during Superman: The Movie. But as production on the sequel continued, creative differences between the director and the film's producers became irreconcilable and Donner left the project. Although Richard Lester was hired to finish production, he chose to make major changes to the film, leaving only vestiges of Donner's original vision and concepts in the version of Superman II that was ultimately released to theaters.

Now, nearly thirty years later, Warner Home Video is honoured to grant the wishes of countless Superman fans. With this DVD release, Richard Donner has become the first director in history to be able to complete a film he left during production with nearly all his footage "in the can." Adding back a substantial amount of that unused footage, the director has seen his original vision restored and brought to fruition.

Most notably, the "Donner cut" restores the Marlon Brando role, filmed for, but not included in the final theatrical release version of Superman II. The legendary Brando's performance as Jor-El has finally been restored in key scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the profound relationship between father and son.

With so many other changes, large and small, including a variety of Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman, this Superman II will prove to be an eye-opening experience and an important addition to film history.

Superman: The Movie (1978/2001) Four-Disc Special Edition
A box-office smash, an Academy Award(R) winner and a fan favourite since it first flew into theatres in December 1978, Superman: The Movie assembles an "A List" cast and creative contingent. At its heart is Christopher Reeve's intelligent, affectionate portrayal of a most human Man of Steel.

The movie's legacy was amplified when director Richard Donner revisited this beloved adventure 22 years later and integrated eight minutes into the film. Enjoy more footage of the Krypton Council, a glimpse of stars of prior Superman incarnations, more of Jor-El underscoring his son's purpose on Earth and an extended sequence inside Lex Luthor's gauntlet of doom.

Superman II Two-Disc Special Edition (1980)
Unwittingly released from Phantom Zone imprisonment, three super-powered Kryptonian criminals (Terence Stamp, Sarah Douglas and Jack O'Halloran) plan to enslave Earth - just when Superman (Christopher Reeve) decides to show a more romantic side to Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). Gene Hackman (as Lex Luthor) also returns from the first film with a top supporting cast, witty Richard Lester direction and visuals that astound and delight.

Superman III Deluxe Edition (1983)
Meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a half-witted computer programming wiz. Reeve reprises his role, deepening his character's human side as Clark Kent reunites with old flame Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. When Superman becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure, Reeve plays both roles with dazzling skill.

Superman IV The Quest For Peace (1987)
Christopher Reeve not only stars as the title hero again but also helped develop the movie's provocative theme: nuclear disarmament. To make the world safe for nuclear arms merchants, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) creates a new being to challenge the Man of Steel: the radiation-charged Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow).

Supergirl
Creative forces behind Superman: The Movie bring another DC Comics hero to life with this fun- and effects-packed adventure about the Girl of Steel. Helen Slater plays the title role, battling a sorceress (Faye Dunaway) for control of an alien power orb. Peter O'Toole and Mia Farrow add more starpower.

We'll bring you full specs as soon as possible.

The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection

Includes all of the above discs plus:

Superman III Deluxe Edition (1983)

After Superman: The Movie’s epic storytelling and Superman II’s awesome battles, how could the first two hits be topped? In Superman III, meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a half-witted computer programming natural. For him a keyboard is a weapon – and Superman faces the microelectronic menace of his life. Christopher Reeve reprises his most beloved role, deepening his character’s human side as Clark Kent reunites with old flame Lana Lang (Annette O’Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. And when Superman becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure, Reeve pulls off both roles with dazzling skill. Incredible visual effects abound – but above all it has heart, heroism and high-flying humor. All in superabundance.

DVD Special Features:
- Commentary by executive producer Ilya Salkind and producer Pierre Spengler
- Vintage TV special The Making of Superman III
- Additional scenes
- Theatrical trailer

Superman IV The Quest For Peace

Christopher Reeve not only dons the title hero’s cape for the fourth time but also helped develop the movie’s provocative theme: nuclear disarmament. “For me, it’s the most personal of the entire series,” Reeve said. “It directly reflects what Superman should be, and should be doing.” Superman does a lot this time around. To make the world safe for nuclear arms merchants, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) creates a new being to challenge the Man of Steel: the radiation-charged Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow). The two foes clash in an explosive extravaganza that sees Superman save the Statue of Liberty, plug a volcanic eruption of Mount Etna and rebuild the demolished Great Wall of China.

DVD Special Features:
- Commentary by screenwriter Mark Rosenthal
- Additional scenes
- Theatrical trailer

Er komt dus blijkbaar geen 14 disc. Enkel de 8 disc box met daarin Superman The Movie (4 disc), Superman 2 S.E. ( 2 disc), Superman 3 D.E.(1 disc) en Superman IV D.E. (1 disc)...

"Unfortunately, the box art in the trailer for the Donner Cut is not correct so they are fixing it. Regarding The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection, we have not received approved finalized artwork for this. Unfortunately, your fans are just going to have to wait regarding the Ultimate box set as we don't have any news as yet. We will make sure you are part of the initial announce when we do announce."

Scene 'Lois suspects'

Super Blunder

Those of you who have pre-ordered copies of Warner Home Video's forthcoming Superman: Ultimate Collector's Edition might want to think twice. Due to a massive technical blunder, the Superman III: Deluxe Edition discs contain the original 2001 release of the film, rather than the advertised disc with commentary, additional scenes and a vintage featurette.

Reports indicate that The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection and the individual release of Superman III: Deluxe Edition are unaffected. At this time there has been no word on whether or not Warner intend to issue replacement discs. Even if replacement discs are made available, non-US residents who purchased the set will most likely be left out in the cold. When you combine this with the fact that the advertised original 1978 Dolby Stereo soundtrack for Superman: The Movie is also missing, what could have been the year's best release becomes a less than attractive proposition...

Bron: www.dvdactive.com.

Okay, folks. Here's Warner's official statement on the Superman discs:

"Bonus content was omitted from the Superman III Deluxe Edition in the 14-disc Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition. Furthermore, disc one of Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition did not include the Dolby Digital 2.0 mix. Neither disc is known to be physically defective in any way.

Warner Home Video wants to extend apologies to all of our loyal Superman fans who've waited so patiently for these great collections and has taken immediate steps to correct these errors with the intention of standing behind our product 100%.

Replacement discs can be obtained by calling: 800-553-6937. The exchange program applies only to purchases of the Superman III Deluxe Edition in the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition and to disc one of Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition, available as a single title, as well as in The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection and in the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition."

Just so you know, we're trying to find out if and when future corrected sets might arrive in stores, and if this replacement program will work for international customers (who may have purchased the R1 sets via Amazon) as well. We'll let you know when we hear anything on these issues.

Stay tuned...

Ik heb 't inderdaad ook gelezen

Hier komt ie:

Hello Michael,

Unfortunately there have been some changes in this procedure, due to the fact that Warner has come up with new information.

Warner are replacing discs for international customers who contact them via the 800 number. They will mail out the replacement discs in a return prepaid envelope and when the customer receives he needs to return the original discs in the return envelope. Unfortunately we cannot obtain the discs ourselves and replace for customers as would be the easiest way and customers have to deal with Warner direct at this time. They may change this but for now this is the only way to go. There "official" press release is below:

It would also appear that Warner are not about to recall the boxes currently in distribution but in fact continue to ship them as they feel that the problem is not that great that warrants a recall or immediate fix. So any new stock we receive will continue to have the same problems for the time being.

If any customer wishes to return the whole set then we will accept them as a return but we will not reimburse postage on the return as customers can have the problem rectified by dealing direct with Warner.

Before, Warner gave us an answer we were trying to accommodate our customer asap, to get these
products back to see if we could beat the Christmas rush, however, since
then we have received word from Warner. As soon as I get the package I will be sending the item
back to you asap, via FedEx so that I can get it back before Christmas. If you still want to return the full product,
please let me know. However, it is important to note that:

Warner have announced they are discontinuing the Superman Ultimate Collection effective immediately. We can no longer get anymore stock on this title and they will not be making anymore with or without corrected discs.
There is some talk that they may do another version sometime in the future but will be in different packaging but this is purely speculation so these may well become fairly exclusive collector's sets and customers who were thinking of returning might do well to keep them and phone in to Warner for replacement discs rather than returning the whole box for credit in the hope of a reissue with corrected discs.

Regards,

Sorry for the inconvenience, once again.

We're almost there, friends. The blue box will go on sale beginning at 3:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern time on Thursday, February 21, 2008.

FSM's 8-CD box set, SUPERMAN: THE MUSIC (1978-1988), encompasses a new fully remastered and complete edition of John Williams's SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE along with previously unreleased presentations of the complete scores for its three sequels: SUPERMAN II & SUPERMAN III (adapted and conducted by Ken Thorne) and SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE (adapted and conducted by Alexander Courage and featuring new themes by John Williams). The latter is spread across two full CDs of never-before-released music and songs. Also included in the set is a bonus disc of additional alternates, source music and songs, plus a full disc of Ron Jones's music for the 1988 Superman animated series, rounding out a full decade of Superman music. The 8 CDs are accompanied by an in-depth, full-color 160 page hard-bound book, all housed in an elegant blue slipcase box with the Superman "S" embossed in silver.

The set is available as a limited edition of 3,000 copies priced at $119.95 each, and may be ordered beginning at 3:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern time on Thursday, February 21, 2008 via www.screenarchives.com. Additional information and sound samples will be available at that time.

Why announce the announcement? Because we have a limited number of autographed copies and want everybody to have the same chance at reserving one: Fifty (50) copies of the enclosed book have been signed by composers Ken Thorne and Ron Jones. These autographed editions will be available for $199.95 each on a first come-first served basis and with a limit of one (1) per person -- also through Screen Archives Entertainment at the same date and time.

SUPERMAN: THE MUSIC (1978-1988) is produced by Mike Matessino and Lukas Kendall and celebrates the Man of Steel's official birthday of February 29 as well as a triple anniversary year.... The character made his debut 70 years ago when Action Comics #1 hit newsstands, and 30 years ago, on December 15, 1978, SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE was released, introducing audiences to Christopher Reeve's indelible portrayal and John Williams's classic themes. Additionally, Warner Bros., the studio behind the Superman series, celebrates its 85th anniversary in 2008. With SUPERMAN: THE MUSIC, Film Score Monthly delivers a release befitting this multi-tiered celebration.
See you next Thursday!
